I own a 987 Gen II registered June 2010 so now due a major service although mileage to date is only 11000. Booked in to Porsche Centre Edinburgh for "Fixed Price" service at cost of £549 + Brake Fluid change at £135. Then told that service does not include other recommended items! Aircon Service £180 New Spark Plugs £215 Drive Belt check £54 Tyre Sealant £54 All costs are after 10% PCGB discount but the "Fixed Price" cost almost doubles and are they all essential items on such a low mileage car?? Can someone advise what is essential? Should I consider an independent? Thanks. David

Are the "other recommended items" part of the Major Service which requires the dealers stamp - If not can't they be done separately at an Indi before the OPC do the service?

David, I wouldn't think that any of the items are "essential" but after 4 years it's probably best to get the drive belt and sparking plugs checked out. And if you're going to remove the plugs to ensure that they haven't seized, you may as well get them changed since most of the cost is in labour. It's also easier for the technician to manually turn over the engine with the plugs removed to check the drive belt, although £54 sounds a lot of money to perform a 5 minute task. An aircon service can be obtained for half the price elsewhere and it's questionable whether or not the tyre sealant is of much use anyway. If the car isn't on Porsche's extended warranty scheme and you're not fussy about having an OPC stamp in the service book, it could be worthwhile getting a quote from a reputable Independent. Jeff

Hi David You've got to get the brake fluid done every 2 years anyway Drive belt check should be part of a major service in my book, if the aircons OK don't bother yet. Tyre sealant what £54!!! Now the spark plugs my Porsche Centre didn't bother to tell me anything on that score until I couldn't start the car 3 times. Mine was nearly 7 years old by then so I went somewhere else for a lot less money and I'd had done nearly 30k by then. I had also paid £1175 for a PC service at 6 years so I wasn't that impressed with them and they'd never changed the belt either! So you are paying for lots of looking but not doing at PC's, so your choice really, but you can't go wrong at a good indy The book says change the plugs after 4 years, so I think that should be part of the major service too Cheers Mo Boxster S 3.2 11 years and 44k [8|]

The OP is correct with all his prices ..whether you agree or not that some should be done/charged as part of the major service or not . I for one have never paid the OPC the asking prices even allowing for the 10% club discount . It's called negotiating[;)] depends how much you value the stamp in the book if you are happy to use an independent there are several close to you who all come highly recommended.Go back and ask for there best deal used to allow you to supply your own oil which will save you over £100 straight away .but do not try this with Glasgow OPC as they will not do it .Also ask them for their best deal stating you are a Porsche member .

My car is over four yrs old so falls under a different pricing strategy with the major costing £395 & £75 for the brake fluid. However Mid Sussex are unwilling to budge on this even with PCGB membership or some other club.

Hi David, I don't know where you are based but i find Tony of Carrera Engineering in Waltham Abbey a great guy to deal with old school knows his stuff. I went to Porsche East London the first time my car is a very low mileage 2002 Boxster 3.2S and had a service which was the small one at the time I paid £600 + sparkplugs I then had to return as my oil level was low! Found Tony and have not gone back since. Regards, Martin
