Boxster soft top not working correctly

Hi members.
I posted a while ago about my 'new to me' Boxster cigarette lighter replacement. My best friend who also has a Boxster 2002 986 2.7 litre, and was instrumental in me buying my car which still gives me a grin one mile wide every time I get in and drive it, especially when I put down the top, cannot enjoy his open air driving. After getting his car out of winter storage he found the soft top would not open. Running on a very tight shoe-string and not following me onto this site he Googled what the problem might be and it was suggested he remove the relay and tap it against something!!! This he did and on replacement the roof lowered but then would not raise it. He currently has a non secure car and is unable to therefore use it. He says that the motor that operate the roof isn't being activated. Could it be the microswitch at the roof locking, the toggle switch to activate the open/close, the relay or even the motor. As I said he is on a tight budget to start replacing in order the various parts so I said I would post this message to see if anyone can/would help me offer him some hope. Thank you.

It could be any of the items you describe but have you removed the relay and tapped it again? If it worked once then it may work again and if it does then replace it.

if the percussive maintenance on the relay doesn't help close it then theres a process in the manual ( or certainly available online ) and a tool in the toolkit to unclip the mechanism and allow the roof to be raised manually. Would at least make the car secure. After that - as others have said, could be a number of things, and needs to be diagnosed.

You may find an enthusiast in your local region who has some appropriate diagnostic equipment or 1st hand experience who would take a look.

Obviously we don't know if the car is suffering the same issue I had many years ago with my first Porsche, a 2.5 986 Boxster, but one day I arrived home from a summer day out and went to put the roof up and it wouldn't work.
Managed to garage it overnight at my sister's house just down the road.

Next day took it to JZ Machtech (now JZM Porsche) at Kings Langley.
They diagnosed a dirty switch, cleaned and replaced it, charged me not a lot, and it worked for as long as I had the car.

Fingers crossed it's such a cheap and easy fix for your friend.

I have passed all this and maybe more to come to my best mate and will update how it has gone.
Thanks people
