Has anyone any experience of this exhaust for 986's

Seems remarkably cheap at £269 - about half the cost of other suppliers

I have ordered one for next week, from what i can find out they are made in China out of 304 stainless steel and are sold all over the world. On u tube a guy in the states tell you how to fits and what problems he had, it then shows a video, up to 2500 revs it sounds like stock, above that it sounds like a sexy old air cooled 911.If any one wants to see the video let me know and i will find the link

Hi fitting it this week it looks like good quality 304 stainless steel, highly polished and despite two separate back boxes a lot lighter,(mine is the boxster s limited edition 550 spider 2004 the one with the two triangular tail pipes)Will post when done.

hi have you fitted it ? what's it like any vids? thanks

Hi all
Fitted the exhaust with my mate Carl who has a garage and a ramp, did not need to remove rear bumper just unbolt the double clamps and push back towards the back cats, then unbolt the top mounting bolts. It was about three times heaver than the new one.Carl fitted the new one he said he did not have problems he just had to play around to centerer the tails. On my first boxster i did a kettle exhaust mod IE, fit (weld) two stainless pipes in front of the silencer then bent round the silencer and cut and welded to the tail. The sound this made was like stock up to 4000 revs then just a little louder but you could only hear it in first and second gear. This toyo performance Exhaust is very different on start up it has a deep base sound not as bad as a subaru a more sporty sound (flat six)It seemed a little too loud at first but over the week it seams to have settled down. One thing i will change is that on the stock exhaust porsche have a rubber mounted bolt system to stop vibrations from the exhaust droning in to the cab, i will be fitting rubber washers between the mounting clamp and bottom of the gearbox.Overall i am happy with the exhaust it sounds like the new boxster even a little burble on the over run, will try to post video if it ever stops raining []

I'm keen on buying one of these too but I also like the idea of deleting the secndary cats. Is this something that would work well with the new system? I see the cat delete pipes can be bought from a couple of the Porsche parts people BUT they seem to be an outrageuos price for what they are. Am I missing something here or am I looking in the wrong places. How easy, I wonder to simply cut out the secondary cats and weld in a new straight pipe.
Any thoughts?

I fitted my rear box a couple of weeks ago, and followed Ken's advice with additonal rubber mounts.
Nice burble when started - and good sound above 3000rpm.
However 2000-3000 there's unbelievable droning.
Now, gone back to original box.
With regard to cats - thats where emissions are controlled, I believe. It is possible to change to 200 cell cat, but 100 cell are borderline for MOT limits.
Me - back to the drawing board ................

Sorry I missed this post as I could have cautioned you about the terrible drone between 2500-3200 rpm I experienced when playing around in the past with bespoke custom made systems

I once had the pleasure of a chance meeting with the 986 head of design at Goodwood Festival of Speed and he advised me that the exhaust system on the 986 was very complex and playing around with it could cause many headaches. Sadly I didn't listen and his words proved right and I would add driving other 986's my car with the non standard system definitely felt down on power too [&o]

I should add had far more success on all fronts when I converted my boxes on my 987 S using the expertise of Carnewal http://www.carnewal.com/ who know there Porsche stuff and are extremely helpful too

P86 "GT" Exhaust
The GT exhaust is a reworked original exhaust, modified in our workshop. From the outside, it looks just like stock but the internals are changed to a better breathing, less restrictive exhaust.
The result is a louder and deeper sound with no reasonance.
This exhaust does not trigger check engine lights does not give you any problems during the yearly technical inspection.

This exhaust is internally modified !
No plumbing tubes on the outside....

Wow, thanks for that everyone. Really didn't expect that but well warned. I suppose the standard system does actually do its job rather well as it is.

The only other way that has been on an old forum, is installing bypass tubes around the back box.
If you do some digging, you'll find three photos showing how it's done - but cannot vouch for droning, performance or economy - only noise.

Just noticed your comment about Carnewal - totally agree but he hasn't done 986's for a while now. He was my first port of call some months ago.

Isn't it only a case of not not doing them, but rather you have to send him your exhaust to work on because he can't get original ones any more?

Update fitted rear rubber bushed bolts to support the exhaust. Will have to try out on motorway the only time i have problem with drone is 5mph over spoiler up speed.Same speed as wife starts nagging.I will work on this as i love the sound it now makes.sbloxxy deleting the secondary cats dont do it no advantage at all mot fail The biggest problem with the boxster exhaust is the header down pipe 3 into 1 were it meets in box shape and turns through a narrow neck.On my old 2002 2.7 boxster i installed bypass tubes around the back box. They were 18mm s/s tubes this worked fantastic just slightly louder than standard no problems at all.( only having to tell a mot tester to stop revving my bloody car). When i tried it on my Boxster S 550 Spyder Anniversary edition the problem was there is no tail ends to weld to,the only way was to jam the pipes under chrome tail, not good more of a farting sound. This is when i tried this after market exhaust. The internal mod can be done a number of ways inside all there is a couple of pipes with holes in and the mods were to make pipes to bypass the chamber or to just cut the pipes off inside to shorten the distance. As all internal mods meant cutting the exhaust across the weld fold line and then good welding back together it was outside my skill level so never tried it.
Cheers Ken
p.s. on the 2.7 boxster the bypass tubes were fitted on boxster s exhaust which i got from Douglas Vally breakers 50 pounds good luck

He's still doing 986's. Went to Belgium and had mine done in July. Very pleased with the results.
