Boxster stereo fitting

Hi all,

I will be picking up my 04 boxster later this week. I want to put in my Sony mp3 player into it. I have had it in 3 cars and it is a superb stereo without the hasstle of amps, woofers and the like. Anyway, does the factory fit stereo have the standard din connections or will I need an adaptor harness? My boxter does not have the Bose upgrade.

Cheers!

If I knew the answer at one time, then I do not remember. This is what I can say.

You have the 23 radio used 2003-2004. 1999-2002 had the 22 radio. With the 22 you could buy a Becker aux-in adapter that plugs into an empty space in the back of the radio (if a cd changer was not already hooked up to the back) and operate an MP3 player via the adapter. A picture of this adapter is below. With the 22 you would program the radio for aux-in and then the adapter would work.

There are 2 versions of the 23 radio. With and without an external amp. With the external amp means that you have Bose and thus the external amp is in the front boot. In this situation if you plug in the Becker adapter it will not work. But then I seem to remember Becker/Porsche came up with some type of solution.

Your 23 has the internal amp. I do not know what would happen if you tried to use the adapter. I do not know if there in an aux-in function on a 23 radio with the internal amp. My guess is no.

So I will leave it to others. I would say to try the Becker message board but it has been down for a long time

Thanks Tool Pants. That reply does make a lot of sense.

However, I didn't make the original point very clear, I dont have a seporate mp3 player to plug into the radio. I want to take out the original cd head unit and completely replace it with another head unit, one which plays disks with mp3's written on them.

If I remove the 23 radio, will I be able to plug the cables straight into my sony unit (it has standard din connections) or will I need an adaptor kit?

Cheers!

If you have speakers in the dorrs then you have the upgraded sound pack (lesser than Bose) - this also uses a separate amp in the front boot whih is connected to the headunit by only fibre optic cables. You cannot use the Porsche amp with another headunit, so you will have to replace the amp in the front boot as well for one that works with the Sony headunit.

If you don't have door speakers than you should just be able to swap headunits, using a standard ISO wiring loom form the original head unit

I have not got my car, and have swapped the head unit using the existing wiring, just like you said Black80XSA. I will have to get an antenna adaptor as it has the very small SMA plugs. Also there was no switched live, so I have to switch the radio off manually, although it will make me take the front off, like a good boy.
