Boxster tyre wear

Hi

Does anyone have any comments on tyre wear??? My Boxster S has c13k miles and needs new rear tyres due to wear on the outer 25% of both tyres. The local OPC tell me that this is normal wear which I find difficult to believe in terms of mileage and particularly the uneven wear.

Any thoughts before I discuss it further with the OPC/Porsche???

I'd be happy with that on the rear - double on the front.

Uneven wear on the outside suggests an alignment check is required.

pointed this out to the cardiff dealership and he says the tyres are designed to have greatest depth in middle and run the water out to the sides which are shallower. so basically down to the design of tyres. is this correct???

Hmmmm.

I think someone must have changed your tyres without telling you[;)].

Fronts, maybe, but rears barely go much beyond 12,000 miles. And 911s are even worse.

...and I thought your 34.9mpg average and 450-500miles on a full tank was preposterous! Are you sure your Boxster is a standard issue? [:)]

Average, according to the computer, is 34.9 mpg. This is for 2-3 dys use per week, a number of longish journies and driving in /through central London.

I must admit that I do not 'floor it' often - but the computer says that I can get 450-500 miles on a full tank of petrol [Optimax/Ultimate].
 
I feel I have to jump to Julain's defence here. You may think that he's working too hard and giving us figures for his Lupo Diesel by accident. I had Conti Sport Contacts on my 2.7 986 and the fronts did 35k miles despite not hanging about in the corners. The rears didn't last as long obviously but it was still over 20k and were changed when I picked up a puncture. I think if you keep the pressures, tracking and balancing in order and not drive like a Japanese drift warrior you should get good mileage. That said, the Conti's are made of granite compared to the liquorice they make the Pilot Sports out of.....
 
On MPS on my last 2.7, all 4 tyres managed to see through to about 25k, when I changed the rears I went for all 4 as it would only have been a couple of thousand before having to do the fronts anyway.

Maybe the new MPS on the 987 is slightly less hard wearing.
 
Reading this thread I was starting to think I've achieved a wear rate record. I've just replaced the rear Michelin Pilots after just over 31k miles and 3 yrs of use. In defence of my driving style I guess there is a lot of motorway miles in there. I've also done a few trips to Norway where anything approaching spirited driving is not recommended and severely punished!

Needless to say have replaced the tyres with Michelin's again, this time N2 as N1 no longer available according to Micheldever.
 
I now have one OPC telling me that the uneven wear is normal and another OPC (from the same group) telling me there is a problem!!!

Whilst a regularly used tyre specialist indicates an alignment problem.

The fight continues.........
 
5000 over the winter months on a rear set of michelin sports, back to pirelli p zeros will get 8000 if im lucky
 
I am telling the truth about my tyre wear and fuel consumption. After all, you can trust me, I am a lawyer. According to the OBC I still getting about 34.9 mpg and a full tank should give me c.450 miles, if not more on goodish runs.

However, all this talk about tyre wear and the likelihood of having to change the tyres in the foreseeable future begs an essential few questions.

1. Which are the best ones for a 2.7 - grip and longevity?

2. Which is the best, reliable and most reasonable [price-wise] supplier / fitting company in or around the London area?

I know that this issue has cropped up on numerous occasions, but this current forum appears to be the best one upon which I can raise these issues.

Over to you all and thanks in advance for advice.

I had a tyre changed this weekend and can not fault the service of W2 Tyres in Bayeswater. I called www.mytyres.co.uk who are a mail order service and they would have delivered the tyre to W2 for fitting. I contacted W2 directly and they could source the tyre for the same amount so I went to this quaint old mews workshop and had the tyre done perfectly - apparently he's the "man in the van" for the OPC Mayfair, TVR London (when they had the place in Chiswick) and the RR/Bentley dealer in Berkley Sq.

Otherwise, call www.blackcircles.com and see if they are cheaper. They too are a mail order site and will deliver the tyre to somewhere near your postcode though you need to establish if the fitting outfit will look after your shiny sportscar as they may be used to fitting remoulds on old nails.....

And my recommendation is for Mich Pilot Sport 2 N1's which in my opinion are better all round than the Conti's I had on my 2.7 - wet and dry grip, road noise and feel when really pressing on. They don't seem to be wearing as well as the Conti's but I don't have any hard evidence of that.

N-rated Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 are not available for 986s; we have to stick with the original Michelin Pilot Sport. I get my from Costco (membership required) and found them the cheapest fully fitted; I had Pirellis before and the Mich give me much better mileage, I'm expecting almost twice as much miles out of the current rears! They are more noisy than the Pirelli on motoways but I find them to have much better grip in the wet... no experience with Contis...
