Boxster Tyres

I know this is pretty subjective but wondering what recommendations people have for choice. I have a 2004 2.7 Boxster currently running on Dunlop Sport 9090 265/35 ZR18 on rear and 225/40 ZR18 on front. I understand these are not now supplied. If one goes e.g. puncture looks like i will need to buy a minimum of two new ones. Any suggestions for good all weather tyre and anyone seen any good deals. I am in north of England - Manchester area.

Thanks

Pete

I live down south and have always bought tyres from a company in Rainham called Elite. They recommended me to try Vredestein. At first I thought never heard of them but all the people that work there have them on their own cars including the boss on his Bentley. So I bought 4, got them fitted to my 2001 Boxster S £520 fitted and to say i'm pleased with them is an understatement, they work very well in the dry and in the wet. These are what I fitted Vredestein They do mail order too.

As far as I'm aware there are only a handful of manufacturers that can offer N rated tyres which are Porsche approved. These are : Bridgestone, Pirelli ,and Michelin. Though the N rating is not essential , it may raise an issue in the event of an accident since the load rating is slightly different and Porsche reccoment N rated tyres for all their modern vehicles. I beleive there is a full list on Renntech.org under the TSB section. Fitting a similar sized tyre that is not N rated is probably not going to be a major issue, but I would personally not mismatch N and non N rated tyres on a car. Get yourself over to boxa.net and do a search on the tyre section of the forum. you may find a few useful links.

Plus Dunlop, Yokohama, Continental. I'd go for th e Michelins or Pirellis

I have a query about tyres. In the manual its ays that front and back are different sizes based on 17 inch wheels. Our boxster has 18 inch wheels (porsche wheels) but they are ths same size front and back. is this right? will it have any effect on the car at all?

For 986 series cars, the preferred option is Michelin Pilot Sport (old MXM pattern), then Pirelli P Zero Rosso (lower life, may tramline when part worn, similar dry grip, maybe a bit better wet grip at the limit). Not that many cars came with Yokohama AVS Sport, or Dunlop 9090E - nothing wrong with either tyre, have used both on non Porsche cars.

18s for a 986 series Boxster (ie cars up to 2004) should be 225/40ZR18 front and 265/35ZR18 rears. 18" alloys should not be ftted to cars prior to 1998.

Thanks for the reply - but doesnt really answer my question. Does it make any major difference to the car? All 4 tyres are the same size - have been since we bought it - also, can you fit different size tyres if the wheels are the same size?

Stay away from creating your own hybrid of tyre size on existing wheels. Stick with the options originally supplied by porsche. If your car has been upgraded to 18" wheels form the original supply of 17" wheels , make sure you fit the reccomended tyre profile and width as per the manufacturers reccomendations. The tyre works in conjunction with the suspension , which is different between models and specification , so fitting different tyres can upset the handling and balance of the car. The roll bars are set based on the amount of grip and cornering the tyres can offer, fitting grippier tyres makes the roll bar work harder and the suspension too , this can make the car less predictable on the limit.

Hi, I have an Atlas Grey last of the 2004 986 S and the original tyres are on 18" x Michelin pilots, after recent a 111 check, still have 6mm tread left on all tyres and the wear and performace is excellent for normal road use and pretty comfortable, personally my view would to fit only recommend factory options on tyres.Michelin or Pirelli,Later tend to wear quicker but some might prefer a softer tyre, whichis what I have experienced for many years with 944 turbo and pirelli's .Tyre deals elite have a good name as do Micheldever tyres in Hants or Jet tyres on Canvey Island.

You have eiether copy or incorrect wheel/tyres fitted - they should be as i sated in the earlier post - 225/40 on the front on 7.5 or 8 inch wide rims and 265/35 on the rear on 9 or 9.5 inch rims

They are genuine porsche wheels, and it has just been serviced by our local porsche specialist - they didnt spot anything wrong with the wheels.

Then it's time to find another specialist. As stated above, the front tyre size, and wheel rim width, should be smaller than the backs. Your owners manual has the correct sizes.
