Boxster Whine

Hi All,

Took my Boxster S out today and noticed a whine coming from the rear it is noticable from speeds 10mph and above I don't think it's from the engine as I can dip the clutch and still hear it at speed when the engine is at low RPM, it is speed dependant so the pitch changes with speed.

Anyone had this type of thing and any pointers?. I'll take to the OPC as it's still under warranty but thought I'd ask to see if anyone has had anything similar.

Thanks

Uppy

Yes indeed!

I had a very similar phenomenon at speeds in excess of 25 MPH and in cool temperatures.

After being in the OPC 3 times, once for 2 weeks, they could not find the problem.

The saga was prolonged by the fact that the noise first appeared in late October, several months after the puncture. I endured it all winter through to May when the OPC had the car for 2 weeks and could not reproduce the noise. All summer all was quiet until one day I was driving home and happened to pass under a thunder cloud that had just dumped a load of hailstones. The temperature dropped dramatically and all of a sudden back came the noise. Passing back into the August sunshine and it stopped immediately.

It turned out to be a puncture repair where a screw had gone in between the tread grooves. The lads at the tyre depot had not trimmed the rubber insert used during the repair procedure.

The problem went altogether with the next set of rear tyres.

JCB..

My rear tyres are gettting lowish so it maybe that. It has only started now it's colder.

Sounds like a faulty engine bearing - had one of the three bearings on my ex-Boxster go. Whine will be there in or out of gear and pitch rises with engine speed. The bearings are just behind the seats. OPC technician explained that the grease in the bearing was gone. He used a stethoscope to listen to each of the three bearings. Located the faulty one and popped a new one in.

All the work was done within an hour.

Not quite the same noise as you describe; but I once had a wierd mid-range resonance appear on my car.

It took a while to identify that I had not replaced the oil filler cap properly and the engine noises were being amplified through the boot.

Thanks for the replies I am going to book it in at the OPC on Monday get them to check it out I prefer to be the tyres than the bearings it's only done 18.5k so would be a bit disappointed if it's bearings[:(]

Took it to the OPC and it was the wheel bearings they were replaced under warranty so no fuss. Probably be my last Boxster post though, I know haven't done many but I am getting a C2 in a week or so
