Boxter 2003 Electric Fault

Hello,
This is my first post since joining PCGB. So I hope I am posting in the right place.
I have a Boxter S 2003
I recently had the original Porsche radio changed for a Kenwood as I wanted to be able to use my ipod, + hands free phone. This work was carried out by a reputable company.
Some times when I lock or unlock my car the horn sounds twice, in the manual it says that is an indication of a fault. Strange happenings are windows operating intermittently, front and rear boots not always unlocking and locking on the key fob the same also happens with driver and passenger doors, also when I release the roof catch the passenger door window goes down about three inches, the driver door window used to be the same put is now opening fully.
Would be thankful of any advice,
Thanks Keith

might

be a few things that can cause the horn to sound when you lock car , centre console on car not shut , boot or front trunk not shut, you say you had radio changed It might be the alarm system thinking the Porsche radio is missing ,(I think there is a contact in the housing in car that detects a insulated tab on side of original Porsche radio if this goes to ground it thinks the radio has been stolen/missing (it is going to ground on new kenwood unit as the is no insulated tab on unit you need to put a bit of insulation tape on side of kenwood unit) check on Porsche old unit for tab it is on left hand side I had same problem 10 years ago when I changed radio to a becker sat nav unit on my 2001 986s that was a single din unit)as for windows it might be switches in doors also could be worn switches in key fob unit for boots not opening ,try spare key fob? or key fob might need new batterys?

I would start by checking under the passenger seat for wet carpets. The alarm unit is under there, and all the devices you describe are controlled by this unit. If it is wet, get the alarm unit out as soon as possible, remove the cover, and gently dry it out with a hair dryer. And source the leak, of course.

Thanks for your return post rich mich.

It's neither front or rear boot lids, also not center console catch. I can not see an earth tab on either the side of the original radio unit. I do think it might be a good idea to go back to the company that fitted the new radio, I do suspect that this might be the problem. I don't think that it is anything to do with the key fob, I did change the battery in it recently, I did test the old battery which did still have plenty left in it still.

Richard Hamilton,

Thanks for your post, I checked under the passenger seat as well as I could for dampness but could not feel anything.

hi jimbeam

if you type"porsche 986 radio alarm contact" into google there is lots of info on there

[attachment=alarm_contact_insulator_203 boxster.jpg] heres a picture of insulated tab on Porsche radio

there is a spring loaded contact in dash of car that rests on this insulated pad, when the radio is removed this contact touches the metal on housing of radio unit and sets the alarm off ,you need to put a bit of tape on kenwood unit in same position as this or disconnect and tape up wire on contact on car (tape on unit is a better option as new unit will be protected by alarm system)

hope this helps

Hi rich mich, I will give the people who installed the new radio a call on Monday and see what they have to say, thanks also for the tip about using google. I should have thought of that myself?

Try disconnecting the battery for half an hour or so. It resets fault codes and is always worth a try with electrical issues.

speaking from experience with a 2003 boxster s. I had similar but it identical problems that have now vanished. Also worth re syncing the key as per the manual.

Hi All,

I have come back to this thread again, after deciding to live with the fault as it wasn't causing any great problems.

The problem that I now have is, I recently had a problem with my key fob, so gave my local Porsche Centre a call, they advised a new fob, which I decided to go ahead with. This actually did seem to fix some problems such as windows and unlocking rear and front boots. I did however have the problem with the double beep when unlocking the car. I gave Porsche another call to discuss this, they suggested I book the car in for a diagnostics check, they called me with the results to tell me they had takeover a problem with the drivers door locking system, which needed renewing, after recovering from the shock of the cost, I decided to go ahead and have the work done. They returned the car to me the next evening, I chaced it and it unlocked OK without a sound. The next day overtime I unlocked the car (3 times) I got the doable beep from the alarm. I have tried calling them a couple of times, was told that they would get the guy dealing with me to call me back, with no response as yet? I have checked the manual which states: A double horn signal during LOCKING educates a fault in the central locking or alarm system. I am now thinking could I have read this wrong in the first place? although I did not get the double beep unlocking the car the first time it was returned to me.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this. I do intend trying to contact Porsche again tomorrow.

Thanks Keith
