BOXTER - EXTENDED WARRANTY

My Boxster S warranty is about to expire. Can the panel advise if it is worth forking out for Porsches own extended warranty?

Thanks

Absoultely not! It's a 2nd grade warranty at best. Your OPC use a 3rd party warranty company so it's not even direct with Porsche....it is not the equivalent of extending your original warranty.

For example, the Porsche warranty will not cover the RMS - known to be the most common problem with Boxster engines.

I've heard http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/ are good, £368.39 for 1 year (they do an on-line quote) of "platinum" cover and the cover looks to be very good, especially for the engine.

There's also http://www.warrantywise.co.uk/ - they have a policy called "total" which looks very comprehensive - although there was a rumor they had gone into administration - but this doesn't appear to be correct.

GreigM,

Thank you for the info. I don't think I will bother extending the warranty, especially at Porsche prices.

RMS = Rear Main Seal - common fault on earlier boxster and 996 engines (occurs less frequently with 2003 models) - Porsche continually refuse to admit it is a design defect.

Hey John, got the extended Porsche warranty for my 2000 'S', and found it to be comprhensive and a must for the type of car we drive.
Had a new clutch fitted last year, and when it was in bits the flywheel was also found to be u.s. Had it all replaced, no quibbles at all, i had to pay£400 for the clutch, and the porsche warranty sucked on over a grand for the flywheel and all the labour costs.
A pal of mine has a 2000 '996', and two months ago it dropped a timing chain, resulting in a new £14000 pound engine being fitted. All covered under the porsche warranty, including labour, although God knows how much that was. Because he had to wait three weeks for the new engine to arrive, the OPC presented him with full luggage for the car!!
Second rate? I think not, i doubt if the other warranty companies mentioned would have stumped up that kind of dosh!!!
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. I do know the Porsche warranty is expensive at £800, but you can live with that kind of money once a year, but 14K????
Regards, Glenn

I don't see it as a must at all unless you don't mind the £800 pa flowing from your back pocket!

If the car lives up to the literature pushed out by Porsche you shouldn't need a warranty at all!

It doesn't cover by default the single most common thing that goes on this car - the RMS.

JCB..

(IMHO)..

Absoultely not! It's a 2nd grade warranty at best.

This is bit strong, it isnt the same as the original warranty and Porsche Cars state this. That does not make it second rate, as the above experience shows. I recomend it to anyone who asks me as I have been rung up by 4 or 5 owners who have had expensive repair bills. Not many, and good odds until it happens to you

By the by I had a 3rd party warranty on a grey import Impreza STI a few years ago but thought it was just window dressing and not worth the paper it was printed on. Luckily, I had no reason to claim on it.

I don't think it's a bit strong, if you directly compare the warranty with once at half the price from a 3rd party warranty company then you will see it falls well short of cover, including RMS. Surely you are aware that the warranty you buy from and OPC isn't underwritten by Porsche or the OPC, but by one of the 3rd party companies and that it is given the usual Porsche markup (i.e. + 100%)

I have purchased Porsche Extended warranty in the past and would certainly consider it again. Having a contract with Porsche allows me to take the car to my OPC and let them take care of any problems. Do the third party suppliers let you choose where to have the car fixed and guarantee genuine Porsche parts?
On the other hand if you believe there will be no problems with the car set the warranty amount aside for repairs and when at the end of the year you are proved correct the money is still on your bank account

I understand why people would take it on for the peace of mind but personally I wouldn't.

Maybe we're lucky but after 18 months of ownership all the car has cost us is a service and a new set of tyres.

I just don't see the warranty being value for money and i'm always too suspicious that they'll try and wiggle out of any claim I make.

Just a personal thought.

jcb, of course i do not relish the prospect of £800 flowing from my back pocket, who does??? however, rather that than £14000 for a new engine. thats the whole point of insurance, surely. you hope that you never have to use it, but cars, even porsches break down occasionally, and i for one prefer that peace of mind, especially when changing up from 2nd to 3rd with 7000revs showing!!!!
regards glenn

Greig,

I stand by what I said. How can you compare the marketing puff of cheper offerings on paper? You would have to compare actual claims experience, and I have not seen anything bad about the PCGB offering.
Have you direct experience of, for example, RMS being corrected at an OPC under a £400pa 3rd party offering?

Porsche should just extend the original warranty period but they choose not to, why?

I have done a little research into extended warranties and GreigM is correct, a Lloyd's syndicate underwrites the official Porsche extended warranty, however, it does not cover the RMS.

Sorry, forgot to mention Warranty Direct Gold option at £369 for one year or £700 for two years cover does cover RMS; Porsche are a little greedy I think!

I found out Porsche also use these guys:
http://www.carcareplan.co.uk/

as the front-men on their warranty - beware of what you are buying...this is NOT Porsche themselves, you are just paying Porsche premium on a 3rd party warranty.

A quote from their site:
"Car Care Plan administers programmes for Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche, in addition to may of the world's volume manufacturers."
