Boxter S with PSM

Accelarated out of a right hand bend today and thought I had a problem with my car, revs kept cutting out, then I saw the warning triangle of the PSM cutting in ! I think it saved me from a serious spin. I remember a year ago driving a loaned Boxter s without PSM in a similar situation and I lost control and ended up spinning 360 degrees. These cars put a serious amount of torque through the rear wheels and its very eay to press the right foot a bit too hard. My advilce to anyone speccing upa new Boxter is to go for PSM it only needs to work once for you and it will have paid for itself.

glad you came out unscathed.
was the road wet or icy, tyres ok?
only ask because I have an S without PSM and touch wood have not had any problems
maybe I'm not pressing on enough[;)]

I put PSM to the test this evening as the office car park was empty and coated in ice. With PSM off, I could 360 the car at will with the accelerator however with PSM active, I could feel the individual wheels braking and keeping me in a straight line. Awesome !!!!!!

I think that most reported road incidents involve roundabouts and slip roads and more often than not a leaden right foot is the culprit.

I find that if you are 'pressing on' in the wet the front end tends to break away rather than the rear.

Whilst I a house brick under the throttle will prevent the back breaking away having your car setup using Nicks "Track Day" settings transforms the way it handles and also greatly facilitates communications between you and the car.

Ali and I did the Don Palmer advanced (power slide) day on Monday. The rears were very worn - what was the point of replacing them before the day, they would just get trashed? BUT, the day was icy and wet and after an hour so, the car was virtually undrivable. Don could not demonstrate under steer, the back just came around each time.

Now watching Don or Dillon in the cars was simply awesome, no matter how out of shape they got, they still managed to make the next cones.

Dillon, the young racer assistant loved it, "best power slide car I have ever driven". The combination of the track days suspension settings, sports suspension, no PSM and semi slick rear tyres made it a real hand full (wait for the GT3!)

I must have spun a dozen or more times during the day but had a lot of fun and no damage of course. Just in case, you think this is normal, in all the track days I have done in the various Boxsters, I have spun only twice, both on ultra grippy Cup Sport semi slick tyres.

I improved a little during the day, but need lots more practise, so plan to go back some time, but again, with worn tyres. More fun that way.

A new set of pilot Sports went on the way home, just in time for the snow last night.

Thank you Helen for organising this, more in next months Post, hope you are feeling better now.

Nic,

At the start of the session with Don we forgot to turn the PSM off on my car and only realised this when the car couldn't be provoked to understeer or oversteer. Shows how effective PSM is.

Helen, thanks for organising this. It was an experience but one which I wouldn't want to repeat.

I am doing the Don Palmer day in February with Helen and Larry and A N Other.

Can anyone let me in on a few more secrets about the day?

Alex,

make sure you have waxed your car well includng the wheels.

I have picked up a very stubborn road deposit on the lower leading edges of bodywork and all over the wheels.

Also, be aware you will wear off rather more tread than you are used to.

If you are thinking you might get stone chips on track days etc, I can recommend Incero Track Shield. Very easy to apply, easy to remove.

Oi you!

Actually, i was giving good advice to avoid what heppens when you DONT wax! Come and have a look at my front wheel, it has a very hard to shift film from the track

Autoglym do a very good wheel cleaner - that'll get it off.

When we did Silverstone in 2001 (blimey 3 years ago) it was the week after the Grand Prix and I picked up a nice gobbit of F1 rubber which was a job to remove.

The consistency was somewhere between dog poo and liquorice and it didn't taste much better!

JCB..
