BP 102

According to the papers this morning BP has started to sell its BP 102 octane petrol over here (£ 2.50 per litre!!) in the public pertrol stations (well 6 or so of them anyway).

It is targeted at the "high performance" car driver and names Porsche ([:D]) as feeling the benefits. The popularity of trackdays is one of the BP reasons to sell this.

Has anyone tried it? Is it wise to use it in a new car with 1,500 miles on the clock?

It is such a leap above optimax (98) and BP Ultimate (97), surely it makes some difference

Optimax has now been replaced by V-Power which is 99 Octane.

I suspect the ECU cannot take advantage of anything as high as 102 Oct without a remap. And as for £2.50 per litre the difference would have to be very significant indeed!

Going from 95ron to V-power gives me better performance, fuel econ, etc. But it's only relatively small and not really noticable until you use it for some time and get the computers to calculate what's going on. For me 95 - 99 works out more or less the same financially once you've taken into account the better fuel econ.

I cannot see how 102 is going to give such a noticable performance upgrade that it can have a price tag of 2.50

A quick calculation means that I need to average 70mpg for it to be anywhere near sensible. I think i'll stick with my 28 mpg.

Anyone know if Shell publish a map of where you can actually get VPower? (nothing on their web site that is VPower specific and up in haggis-land the existence of a Shell logo is no sign that you will get VPower.)

Thanks, that's BP102 - A dozen or so locations, one in Scotland!

I notice they don't have the equivalent web page (locations) for BP97 (unlike SE englandshire, most BP's in NW scottyland don't stock "Utlimate" - so a map (or POIs for SatNav) would be good.

Shell are same (no info - they want you to assume its everywhere)

Thanks,
Confirms my fear. No VPower available in the Highlands (except 2 stations in Inverness area)[&:]

I don't know about the 997 but most new cars ECU's can untilise 95 to 98 RON so to use and take advantage of anything higher you'll have to have your ECU remapped, but then you might be stuck with only being able to use the higher RON fuels. Its not dangerous to use fuel that is a higher RON than your ECU can handle, however it is dangerous to use a low RON fuel if your ECU is mapped for high RON. At £2.50 a litre you want to make sure you can benefit from the higher octane.
