BP Ultimate/Shell Optimax

I have owned my S2 for the past 8 years and always used 95 RON fuel and it has always run fine, except for one summer holiday in St Tropez [:D] when maybe the heat and the traffic in the town didn't agree with it[:(].

I am starting a new job with a free fuel card[;)].

Will I get any benefit if I switch to BP Utimate/Shell Optimax, since I'm paying tax on it I may aswell get an additional benefit, if there is one.

Has anyone had any experience with switching between the two, I be grateful for any comments.

I had a chat with a guy about this at the factory. Basically the better the fuel, the less you use. Having said that I prefer Optimax as it is generally cheaper than Ultimate and makes my exhaust sound better...

The S2 was designed for 95 RON and runs quite happily on it in standard form. I have tried 98 RON and it makes no appreciable difference to power or economy on a standard car. In the long run it's cleaning properties may help keep your injectors and engine cleaner. IF you have a CHIP that is designed to make better use of the 98 RON fuel then you will see more power from it. On our dyno day last year there were several S2's with Promax chips that saw power readings around or over 230bhp (with decat exhausts and free flowing filters as well)

Tuned Turbos can take even more advantage of the increased RON as this will allow the use of higher boost without the risk of detonation or engine damage

Paul is right. I run Optimax on my Turbo which has standard ECU chips and find no benefit in terms of power or torque. I decided to switch due to the cleaning properties of Optimax which are supposed to be true and not all marketting hype. I have noticed that the engine does seem to run a bit smoother on optimax than on standard unleaded. This is just one those things i've noticed since the switch so until I get a few tanks of std unleaded in there as a comparison i'll wont know if this is more of a phychological thing.

It made a noticeable difference on my Blitz chipped cab and when I used to run my Turbo on standard chips with a boost enhancer tweaked up a l'ittle bit' it would only run on Optimax without triggering the knock sensor.

Boost and ignition are cut (quite violently). Mine would run happily and reset itself after 10-15 seconds of very light throttle but lots of people have to turn the ignition off and back on to reset it.

Did it run on tickover or stop completely?

Mine cut out once and would only run on tickover until I switched it off. Then it started and has been ok since!

It only happened after a couple of seconds of full throttle in 3rd or above so some way from tickover. It could have bump started itself I guess but there was no flicker of lights on the dash so I think it would have idled. When it did it I would back off and then gently start to feed in the throttle again (I was accelerating for some reason after all). Provided I did that gently enough for 10-15 secs it would then be back to normal.

For what its worth my ProMAXed lux (chip, K and N, Weru ignition, and other bits!) runs loads better on high octane fuels. Smoother and more powerful, on low (normal) unleaded she drinks fuel, to the level where it is cheaper to run on Optimax/Ultimate getting 29 mpg overall. Also Nectar points at BP!

Before I changed jobs I use to have a fuel card and the company didn't allow anyone using the expensive fuel so I would check with your bosses first that you are allowed.

Just gone back to 95 RON after a few months on Optimax. I'm on my 2nd tankfull now and can say I have noticed no difference at all. I thought it was running a bit smoother on Optimax but I must have been imagining it since it's running just as smooth on 95 RON. I think i'll stick to the standard stuff.

Hi guys,
Posed this question on the 997 forum trying to find out if there was any difference between Optimax or Ultimate but no-one had any real thoughts. Run my good lady's S2 and my 997S2 on Optimax but cant always find a Shell station when travelling down here in Devon. Have any of you mixed a tank and are there any noticible effects.
Cheers
Simon
