Brake and fuel line questions

2 quick questions.
1. Any recommendations for caliper refurb? One company quoted £1K for the 4 calipers to include rebuild, paint and flat back for the logo - the paint and flat back costing £570! This may be the price but would be interested in comments.
2. I have rust on the fuel lines in the rear as they come into the wheel arch area before the fuel pump. Can I clean them up or should I replace?

I've just had mine done by BIGG RED in Worcester. the calipers on my car are 928 calipers and apparently the pistons are no longer readily available from Porsche. Bigg Red have a tame guy who machined a new set for me from stainless rather than aluminium. It took about 6/7 weeks although that includes Xmas/ New Year.

Cost £900.. I delivered and collected them.

Thanks Eddie - they look good. I'm presuming I have the same ones - 89 Turbo with M030 option. This looks like the going rate...

 
Sounds like its the short fuel lines that your looking at. I guess they are not too expensive to replace with originals. The 2 long lines are a pain. I think about £1000 each! however the bad news is that you need to drop the back axle to fit them...... I need to replace these on my car as the lines over the Axle were replaced by me with flexibles 10+ years ago. The flexible solutions then were not designed to withstand E10 fuel. On my last turbo I had the long lines replaced by new flexible material for the whole run that is designed to withstand E10 fuel. I know my independent had difficulty obtaining fittings. I believe he has done another 3/4 cars since then.

total cost from memory was £600/700

Unfortunately these are the long fuel lines! The good news is that the rear axle assembly is already out, so I have easy access. I did clean them up yesterday but wondering if that is just a short term fix and rather change while I have everything accessible. With the all the costs associated with refreshing the suspension and new sills being fitted, I could do without £700 on fuel lines!

 
Depends on how bothered you are about functionality vs originality?

I’ve just replaced my lines with PTFE/Teflon AN ones, never mind E10 I could run E85 now!

 
E10 petrol only has a 95 octane rating, so I wouldn't use that in a 944 turbo. I'd wonder about the different expansion rates of ali and stainless pistons too.

Bleedin cheek, I looked at the pistons just a month ago. Well, I looked at the box in the cupboard anyway [:)].

 
I'll trust BiGG Red's judgement on the stainless option as they have a very good reputation in the Market place. Clearly the Ally pistons corrode as well...

You pays your money.... I'd trust Brembo's judgement and reputation more.

1) I think I would have them done, minus the paint and flatting and paint them (and maybe install caliper plates) myself,

Quite - I live down the road from Bigg Red and they quoted me £400 to strip the old paint and paint my rear calipers...

That is after I've already stripped all the plates and fixings from the calipers...

Needless to say I've purchased a big tin of industrial paint stripper and will be getting one of those brake caliper paint kits to paint them myself at that price.

All they needed to do was strip the original paint and paint them - I am replacing the seals / pistons / bleed valves / plates myself.

I see they told you the original Porsche pistons are NLA - I haven't tried to order any but the ones for the rear (28mm and 30mm off the top of my head) show as available in PET and they aren't a bad price either from Porsche. Bigg Red have never used original Porsche or Brembo parts as far as I'm aware and what I've gleaned from speaking to them and reading their website. Yes they might do a good job but you won't have genuine Brembo bits in your calipers anymore.

You can get most of the Brembo parts for a rebuild here - (just get either from Porsche or these guys depending on who is cheaper)

I believe this is run by the guy who does caliper rebuild services and is thoroughly recommended on most Porsche forums (911uk etc)
