Brake caliper identification help please

Hi all
does anyone recognise these calipers ? are they 944 turbo ? or 944S2 or what ?

note the raised lines running down the face of the calipers which are a distinquishing feature of this caliper, most others I've seen are plain fronted

given the physical size of the calliper, they are either 944 turbo > 1987 front or rear, or 944s2 front or rear, or late turbo rear, the piston sizes and seal type will tell all!

sorry I'm not sure how that helps really?[:(]

I know that they are either turbo or S2 but which ? that is what I need to know .
I need someone that has seen both and knows which is which before I order new pads.

Could someone with a 1989 S2 take a picture of their front calipers for me please ?

well if they are either turbo or S2, then they are S2, the 88 on turbos were physically bigger - but like I said if you can tell the piston diameter that will identify them for sure

Looking at the pipe they would apear to be fronts off 944S2 or early 44 turbo/968 or 964. Is the
Porsche scriprt cast (raised) or stuck on, if it is cast the calipers are from earlier cars. The only way of telling which car they are from is to check the piston sizes.

yes but if I strip them off to measure the pot dia then I might as well measure the pads which would be a better identification.
This is what I am trying to avoid. Having to do the job twice with my bad back.

I was hoping that the actual caliper casting would be a clear indication which car they were off.

Both the porsche script and the longitudinal lines are both raised on these calipers. I have searched all over the net for hours and I cannot find a single bl***y image of a caliper anywhere ....amazing

can someone please take a picture of their front caliper ???????? You don't need to remove the wheel.... enough will show through a cup wheel to tell me which type of caliper is standard on an S2 1989 model

I would say they are early turbo/s2 calipers, The easiest way to tell is how the bolt to the hub, early S2/turbo's bolt from the back where as the later turbo calipers are radial mounted or early ones have a standard mounting bolt which is exposed and the later ones have a smaller allen bolt which is counter sunk !!

thanks Simon its definitly not an MO30 part at least I now know that much

This is a late turbo caliper, same as an M030 or 'reasonably big black' (but red)!

thanks John but unfortunately I need a face view for identification purposes. I can't make out enough

They are standard S2 callipers and take a 96x48mm pad

A standard S2 has the same callipers front and rear, so if they are the same as your rears you know they are definately S2

The 250 Turbos have a much bigger front calliper which takes 132x61mm pads

thanks Paul thats useful info. My calipers appear to be the same size front and rear but its difficult to be certain.

Trouble now is I have had several replies that are contradictory and several guesses so I am still not certain what I have fitted to the front of my car except now I know they are definitly not MO30 thanks
the only way to be certain is to get a picture off someone's car or see if I can find a part number on mine tomorrow

thanks. but what is the cutoff date between early and late ? mine is 89 but may have been fitted with later uprated parts.

Believe me they are S2 (early Turbo ) callipers

The larger 250 Turbo callipers on the front are much larger, much, much larger but look the same. You cannot confuse them as being the same size as the rears. Side by side the size difference is clear

Here is a pic of my S2 front caliper

thanks everyone for all your help. This really is a minefield for the uninitiated . I have finally established that my car has the standard S2 type calipers front and rear. phew .[:(]

Now I know exactly which pads I need without stripping it all off and putting it back again today. thank god. Not a job to look forward to with a bad back .!..

Happy New Year everyone. and thanks again

pps nice clean wheels Paul [;)]..........hope they are always kept like that lol [:D]

Yep, they are either S2 front or rears, early turbo front or rears, later turbo rears or 968 front or rears. However the early turbos have what visually looks like the same caliper front and rear - they are the same casting, however the piston sizes of the front calipers are larger. I'm sure this will also be the case witht he S2's, so they are not necessarily interchangeable so you will need to ID them.

The S2/turbo rears have piston sizes were 28mm and 30mm and are the same for both the early and later turob's.

The early turbo fronts are 36mm and 38mm and later increased to 38mm and 40mm. Externally these calipers look identical so you need to either confirm their application by part number or by measuring the piston sizes. I'm assuming the S2 had the same brake arrangement as the equivalent year early turbo - no reason for them not to.

The medium black front calipers fitted to the later turbos are much much larger and have pistons dia's 36mm and 44mm.

The front and rear pads are exactly the same though so don't let us confuse you with too much info :ROFLMAO:
