Brake Caliper Removal

I have taken the plunge and decided to change the front pads and disks myself. All going fine except I need a hexagonal bolt/Allan key tool. Can anyone let me know the correct type of tool to buy. Its a 996 C2 1998. Many thanks
 
It's a 10mm Hex bit you need. If you buy new bolts, they are sometimes 10mm Hex, and sometinmes Torx T55.

Be very careful removing the bolts. The bolt holes go through the wheel carrier, and are open at the other end. Water gets into the threads and can rust the ends of the bolts. The threads on the tip of the bolt can damage the wheel carrier when they are removed. Start by loosening them ¼ turn and retighten. Then turn ¼ turn anti-clockwise and 1/8 turn clockwise. Repeat this until the bolts become easy to turn.

I'll leave that to guru Richard....from what I have seen so far the bolts are lengthy and so the WD may not be successful.
 
It's one of the most satisfying jobs you can do on a 911 swapping discs and pads, the DIY guide in the 996 section is really useful if its your 1st time.

Well I finally finished the task yesterday after hunting around for the correct 10mm tool to remove the caliper!! I have to say that its not that big a job if you do want to attempt this yourself and for those of you willing to take the challenge there is a "You Tube" video of the process....however he misses out on one or two aspects including the wear sensor and the anti vibration shims!! I felt extremely proud driving to work this morning!!! Have a go!!

Apologies for the tardy response.

I bought the kit including sensors, dampers etc from Design 911 and the all inclusive price (inc the dreaded VAT & £10 delivery) was £250. I needed to buy the 10mm tool from Halfords and this was about £8. I reckon I have saved about £200.....I recall a quote of £500 when I was informed the brakes were running low.

For those interested there is a sheet on the tech forum showing the various costs but I have only just managed to get access to this.

The brake article on the tech forum is good but I must recommend the video on You Tube.....a great assett.

When doing this job, a good tip, get some caliper paint, some porsche logos and paitn the caliper at the same time, take you time, leave connected and mask up well, the results are outstanding, new discs, shiny pads and painted calipers, I have done it on my 996 and my boxster, red obviously!
