Brake Calipers

Hi Guys, I think I might need to buy some replacement rear calipers for my 964 Cab, I have had the fronts reconditioned, but the rears are now making that squealing noise, & Hillcrest think the pistion is staying out and just touching the discs.

Any ideas best calipers to get/cost as I hear direct replacements are difficult to find.

Sounds like the typical caliper plate lift to me, have they checked that, or are they on a wallet opening exercise?

If you have the the early 2 pot rear calipers then you can't buy these any long from OPC and also very limited spares as well for these....you will have to get them reconditioned if you want to keep them ....rpm will do them at a cost http://www.rpmtechnik.com/porsche/servicing/servicing.htm

Or buy the later 4 pot rears at over £380 each ..or off ebay as they pop up sometimes ;-)

But if your converting from 2 pot to 4 pot, you also need a new ABS valve as the pressure is different ..approx £50 from OPC

I have just carried out this conversion ..( via ebay ) and can say the car brakes a lot better, as there is more pad area now than the 2 pots to bite on the discs.
 
What Kevin says - you should be able to get them reconditioned with new spring plates, and pistons/seals/dustcovers if needed. About the only reasons for replacing a caliper are if it's physically damaged, or a bleed valve or brake pipe thread has been stripped.
 
All C4s have 4 pot rears and the good thing about these is that the same calipers are used on a number of models including the 944turbo and 928S4. So there are plenty of used ones about (regularly on ebay) but they will probably need re-conditioning. With that said and already said in the other posts above, you might aswell get your own reconditioned. If you can't do it yourself try Classic car automotive on 01625 860910. About £150 per caliper I believe.
 
Correct, and there are plenty of spares for these 4 pots as well..also the pads at the front ( non RS and non Turbo ) are the same for the 4 pot rears..only have to keep one set in stock as a spare now ;-)
 
Hi Chaps thanks for the replies, I understand from my Indy I can't remember the exact fault but I think it is the seal area round the piston is shot & cant be repaired, he is not trying it on, I have nown him ages, sO I was tempted to just buy new breaks.

The car is an Aug 1990 model C2, I have no idea if is 2 or 4 pot calipers, the breaks are fine they just squeal a bit in traffic at really low speed, just is you lightly touch them, and it is the rear set.

They are fine to use but vanity makes me want to fix/change them[8D]
