Brake Disc shields

Not content with fitting a new exhaust system to the car, I've just started on a brake re-fresh. I'm fitting new flexible hoses (braded stainless), new front pads and re-building all the calipers. As per usual, the job is snowballing, the calipers have been a b1tch to strip and I'm not sure if one of them is salvageable!! Anyway, 'whilst I'm in there', I thought I'd remove the brake shields and get them bead blasted and re-painted just to clean things up. So I start at the FNS and try to take the disc off so I can get to the heat shield, I can't remove the cap to get at the wheel bearing adjuster. Plenty of WD40, a good tap with a hammer and drift and still the damn thing won't shift - both sides the same. Anybody else suffered with the same problem, any bright ideas?

Phil,
Can't really help with the problem, but if you're caliper problem is terminal I have a set of 3.2 fronts (would also need a rebuild). Let me know if of interest to you.

If you do track days just remove the shields.

They contribute to heat retention & having removed mine a while ago I can honestly say that even after trackdays the wheel arches are far from covered in brake dust.

This may determine how "careful" you decide to be during removal.

I agree, they are not really needed and I have removed them from other cars (used on track) in the past when changing/ servicing the brakes.

I have been told that a big pair of vicegrips is another way of getting the cap off. Otherwise its just a case of perserverance. Stories of difficulty in removing the caps are legendary, so you are not alone.

I also suggest you leave the stone guards off. Some modern cars (ie Ford Focus) don't have them and they are not necessary.

Cheers Richard, vice grips it is then. I've been soaking the caps in WD40 for hte last two days so I'll try again tonight.
