Brake fluid and ATF fluid - friends or foes?

Hi there,

I did somevery very silly this weekend... was in the process of replacing the brake fluid and venting the calipers and stupidly filled the power steering reservoir with Dot 4 brake fluid!

So I emptied the tank completelly, wiped it absolutely clean, filled with ATF, drained again, wiped and refilled. Throughout all this the ignition was off and the steering didn't move, so I'm hoping none of the Dot4ATF mixture went anywhere.

Any opinions and whether I need to be worrying or not?

I might be inclined to put the two together in a jam jar and see what happens.

If the brake fluid sinks to the bottom you might well have an issue. If it floats on the surface of the ATE fluid then you will have removed it all.

If the two mix instantly then who knows?
 
Just thinking about it, they are both hydraulic fluid, so I would have thought they'd be similar. Whether that means they are similar enough to mix (or be interchangable in use) I don't know.
