Brake fluid

Am going to get it changed in my 1990 C2. Which brand/type should I use? How much do I need to buy?

Thanks
Piers

With a 993 RS in your stable, I would have thought you already know your onions when it comes to brake fluid Piers [;)]. But presuming it's got standard Dot4 in at the moment, then any quality Dot4 will do and a litre should be enough. If uprating to a higher boiling point Dot4 like ATE blue or Castrol Response Super Dot4 (I use this), then you want 2 litres to make sure all the old stuff is flushed through.

Thanks Steve, are there any drawbacks with a higher boiling point Dot4? Car is mainly used for 15 minute thrash to work on B/C roads. I'm unsure of age of fluid currently in car so was plannning to flush it out and start again - is that a good plan?

Brakes in the RS are so damned good you could fill them up with water! [:)]

I would say no there aren't any drawbacks except for it being slightly more expensive. Even then, the castrol stuff I mentioned is only about £10 per litre (from Demontweeks). There are no problems with mixing this with what is already in. What you should avoid (and I'm hoping I'm not trying to teach you suck eggs) is adding Dot5 because that doesn't mix (Dot4 is glycol based and Dot5 is silicone based).

I agree it's a good call to flush it out. I now do a complete flush once a year and bleed a little off (and just top up) after each trackday.

Cheers Steve - certainly not teaching me to suck eggs - I used to live in London and would drop cars of at specialist to get all and anything done. Now I'm in North Norfolk I'm getting small jobs done by local 'spanner' so I'm buying bits and giving them to him. Obviously any 'specialist' work and annual servicing will be done by JZ Machtech.

Why not use Mathew at Autowerke, reputation is good, and I know a couple of people who have had work done by them..
