Brake lamp holders

Anyone else had problems with these?

For most of the past 5.5 years my left brake light has been a bit intermittent. I take the bulb out, clean the holder, put it back and it works fine for a month or two. Now the right hand one has started playing up too.

I'm thinking of just buying a pair of new ones.

I don't have problems with any other bulb holders but I guess the brake/rear side light is marginally more complicated than all the others.

Check the wires going into the connector Mark. I had a similar problem with the nearside rear side light a few years ago. In fact when I think about it I'm sure I just pushed the wire back into the connector as a temporary fix but it has worked perfectly ever since [:)]

Hi - Yes - I now remember you telling me about this trick, and trying it - but it did not work/last for me on the left one. I'll give it another go on both of them! Thanks

Will be interesting to see if you can buy new ones Mark, I tried without success as mine have been 'modified' to accept LED bulbs by a previous owner.

There is some debate as to whether the rear bulb holders are part of the wiring harness or available as a separate item.

They're not available individually according to PETS - only the full rear light harness at around £250.

Have you tried bending the metal contacts inside the light bulb holder so they press onto the bulb contacts better

Ouch - that's the end of that plan then...

I've tried lots of bending and cleaning. Trouble is it takes very little movement to "fix" them. Normally, by the time I have the holder out to start an inspection/adjustment it has fixed itself and no amount of fiddling will stop it working so I don't get to find the real cause of the problem.
