Brake Light problem

Coming home from a fog bound stanstead late last night I noticed my drivers side rear brake light had stopped working, it wasn't the bulb as the main rear light was on it just didn't get brighter when the brakes were applied. Is this likely to be a fuse? (difficult to check in the dark) if not where do I begin the investigation?
 
[:)][:)] Maurice - many thanks, apologies for being ignorant. I'll head to Halfords for some replacement bulbs.
