Brake pad choice

Hello guys

Any recommendations for brake pads on a 944 turbo, have been looking at EBC reds, any thoughts?

The car wont be tracked - I dont think! so just road use.

All the best

Rich

I wouldn't spend the extra for EBC's
I'd go with standard pads - they are pretty good quality, & IMHO have a better feel than EBC's

For the track - the consensus seems to be PF97's - I've got some to go in when my Mintex 1155's are finished.

EBC Reds squeal like piggies when new - You knew exactly where WUF was by the squealing when Rock first fitted his and Beaky was just the same. Tony (944Turbo) seems to suggest EBC Yellows are the same. They seem to improve with use but only after several 1000 miles (or less very hard track miles)

My reds seem to have varying levels of bite - this is most likely due to pad temperature. Assuming cold pads the initial bite doesn't inspire confidence - can even be a little frightening. Warm however I have no issues with the pads at all.

I can't make a direct comparison with other pads as these are the only ones I have used with this brake set up. However, though my previous brakes were smaller the feel was far nicer with Textar (Porsche) pads. My only problem with these was I would boil the fluid on track. For road use (assuming you haven't had problems with brake fade) I would stick with Textar pads.

Several of the guys here have noted excelled results with Performance Friction pads - these are pretty damn expensive and produce very aggressive brake dust so may not be ideal for road use.

No idea John (In fact I couldn't even tell you without checking exactly what compound I have sitting in the garage[:D])

01's are just slightly more aggressive/race oriented than 97's. They have many to choose from, these being sort of medium race oriented. I have 01's on the front, 97's rear. One of Fen's excellent suggestions to me at least.

I would stick with standard OEM pads. When in good order our brakes are fantastic and plenty good enough for anything the road can throw at them.

I have PF97s for the track, they are an 'endurance' type pad and should last quite a while. After 3 trackdays I am estimating they are a third worn so I'm happy

All

I'm interested in the debate. I've got Mintex 1155 in mine and they've lasted for a long..... time. The last three trackdays, Donnington Dec, Snet Feb and R'ham last weekend I've used standard road pads on skimmed, old, slightly warped and starting to crack cross drilled discs.

Didn't have any problems stopping. My plan is to switch back to the 1155's and some new standard (ie not cross drilled) discs for my trip to the Ring in June.

My experience with EBC reds is that they didn't squeal but unfortunately they also didn't work when cold. I did a track day on them and from a fade point of view they were fine. I've now got yellows and they are much much better from a cold bite point of view and again seem to be pretty fade free on track however they do squeal a bit under certain conditions. However the thing i've noticed with both the EBC pads i've tried is that they don't give you much in the way of feel. They feel pretty numb to me and I cannot feel the limits of braking.

I've never noticed a problem from cold & have used 1155's on a few different cars. I prefer the feel of the 1155's to the EBC reds.

My experience with EBC reds is ....... they also didn't work when cold. .....

I'd go along with that. There are times when I'd apply some brake and wonder who stole them.

Mine still squeal periodically but not as frequently as when they were new. And I also agree about the lack of feel.

I will be trying something else next time around.

Has anybody used EBC yellows and are they available for the 944 S2 ? i have been hearing they are a lot better than EBC reds from cold and at temp...

I am using yellows and find them much better than reds - however they were very squeally until I got them very hot (blue disc hot) at donnington, I prefered greens to reds but yellows are better. one a cold wet winter day they need to be pressed early but otherwise fine. They may not be as good as PFC's and other pure race pads.

I had the ebc Yellows for road and track and I found them sufficient for road and what I thought was ok for track...until I listened to Fen and his suggestion for PFC's. That's when I realised how much better you could have. Now admitedly they're a more race oriented pad, but it also depends on how you drive on the road. They do throw more dust and that is the downside but I can't go back and will keep them in permanently, they are too good to refuse.[8D]

01's on the front and 97's on the rear. I don't know where the best place in the UK to get them is but someone here will.
PS is Fen in NZ now?
