Brake Pad Upgrade - Pagid?

Hi

I am currently using standard Porsche pads on my RS and will need to replace them soon. On road performance is excellent and I have found them to be pretty strong on track too, never had a problem with fade and feel is good.

I am curious to try an alternative to see if braking can be improved, must be useable on road. Following are criteria in order of importance and must be better than std pads:

braking performance (road and track)
noise
wear (pads and discs)
cost

Have heard consistent good feedback on Pagid but which one to go for ......... blue, orange, black? If anyone has used or is using Pagids, would appreciate your thoughts on the above. I know they are slightly more expensive than std pads but interested in how much better people feel they are.

Before I had even driven my 993 RS in anger (I only got it in December 2004) I had Pagid Yellows fitted to the fronts because I needed new discs anyway. I chose yellows after asking for advice on pistonheads.

The yellows are said to be good for endurance races in that they are hard-wearing, yet they still have a good coefficient of friction......ie they should stop well from cold. I would say this is half true. My brakes need a little warming before they work well. Stamping on the middle pedal does stop the car when the brakes are cold, but it isn't confidence inspiring. By the way, it only takes a few seconds to warm them up. Even on a motorway drive in the cold they always work in emergency stop circumstances.....if they didn't I would have thrown them away. The sign that they have warmed up is they squeel like hell. It makes you blush in town.

I am hoping that they last forever. They cost £170 for the front pair.

If I could chose again I would go for Pagid Blues or even standard Porsche pads. Most people who use these don't experience fade.

I'm in the exact same position, need to get this sorted before next weekend ! (although posting here will hopefully ensure I don't get heckled for trying out non-porsche[:mad:])

spoke to Sean D and he said the Pagid Black's (ceramic based) are the best for my car (road + few track days), yellow does look impressive

other option is Red Stuff Ceramic or the Porterfirld Ceramic (recommended by another 993'er) both which seems to compare well with the Pagid

I might still plump for std Porsche but if I can source either the Pagid or Red Stuff in time I might try the alternative as I want to give it a go..

maybe we should do a mini group buy !


 
Running Pagid Orange on the Cup Car (box marked up 'Not for road use'.....) and when I did drive on the road, they squealed like hell since never got hot enough.

They are fantastic on track (and were original fit in the Carrera Cup).

Nought wrong with OE, I used them tracking my 964 C4 some years ago with no fade problems whatsoever.

I wouldn't change just for changes sake for the use you are giving them.

 
pagid oranges as well. good on track, squeal in town. fine on motorways etc.
dunno how long they last - were quite expensive from memory when replacing all 4 corners [:mad:]

heard only bad things about the red stuff/green stuff pads - been told to avoid.

performance friction (?) pads been recommended by a couple of people as being good.
 
I ran my 993RS on standard O.E pads for over 5 years, doing lots of track days with no problems at all.
Last year when the car was having its annual service we opted for "Performance Friction" pads which were expensive.
Now on track the braking is evan better, with a noticable improvement in the "bite" and really give confidence.
On the road there is no marked additional warming up required, however the downside is they squeel like pigs ALL the time!!

I'd echo what Matt and John say about the Performance Friction pads. I have them in my C2 (and previously on my 3.2) and have been very happy with both road and track performance, only problem, as mentioned, is that they squeal like a b@stard in town. At the weekend I was braking for a mini roundabout and the assembled group of chavs waiting to cross the road actually burst into laughter at my squeaky car !!!

Two other pads I've used successfully (albeit on the 3.2 rather than the C2) are the Porterfield R4-S, but these are even more expensive than the Performance Friction (but less than Pagids), and as a budget option Mintex 1155 (not 100% sure these are available in RS sizes, but in theory Mintex will special order to any spec). I never got a chance to try the Mintex on track, but at roughly half the price of any of the other 'upgrade' options I thought they were worth a try and seemed good on the road. Both of these are available from 9M - so a chat with Mr Belton might be worthwhile as he certainly knows his RSs ! (I get my Performance Friction pads from BS Motorsports by the way).

If you doing a fair bit of road work the Pagid Fast Road (as opposed to Race) blacks are very good.

I'm just upgrading to Pagid Blue's all round on the CS after a fair bit of consultation.

I will probably stick to OE or Pagid Blues.

Tim - would love to hear how you get on with them once you have them a workout and whether you think they are better than OE pads.

all you need now is cupholders, a few kg's of sound deadening, leccy windows and mirrors and maybe raise the suspension a couple of inches to make it more comfotable in the Waitrose carpark [;)] - you'll be buying a GT3 next [:D]
 
I just prefer the stealth approach - I hate people pointing at me when I drive down the road saying who is the pr*t with the knackered brakes!!

Rest I can live with [:D][:D].
 
Just came in from the sun too hot here!..............Yellows last a good long time but sure squeal like most Pagids , blues wear out very quickly if u give em stick Orange that bit better on wear and not that hard to get warm....................one key point is to bed them in a per manufacturers instructions , really cures them and far better thereafter

Next thing you'll be telling me that the 'nescafe wave' van drivers keep giving me means something else...
