Brake pad warning light

Evening, had to go to cleethorpes today from Leeds. With 10 miles to go and cruising on the motorway, heard a massive bang, looked in the mirror and saw a rock sized object bouncing into the undergrowth. Straight away brake pad sensor warning light came on and started beeping. Tested the brakes and they seemed ok so carried on. Before setting off for home checked wheel nuts tight and all brakes looked ok. Brake pad light had gone out. Stopped for petrol and light came back on. What do you think is most likely explanation? I've just about discounted anything has fallen off the car, more likely a rock has damaged a brake pad sensor, although unusual to hit a rock on the motorway, and god knows how I didn't see it.
Cheers

Would check the fluid level and take each wheel off and have a look for any stray fluid or damaged wires. One of our vans had a a similar thing, damaged a brake rear line, fluid loss was slight and we only noticed no brakes a couple of days later!

The rock has probably damaged the wire leading to one of your sensors. The system works by a fine wire plugged into the brake pad which runs as a continuous circuit. When the pad wears down it breaks the wire and the light illuminates. I would guess it has snapped one of your wires, but do please double check your pads are all ok as it could be an extreme coincidence that one of them has worn through.
