Brake pads & discs

Took my car, a 2012 diesel with 52K on the clock, to my dealer today to have a new windscreen fitted and to have my winter wheels added. I got a phone call later to say the engineer has reported my pads and discs are worn and need replacing. I can understand the pads wearing after such mileage but the discs too? Would appreciate comments of other owners as I have not had a new set of pads before and am surprised the discs are also worn, in the case of the fronts 90% and the rears 70%. I thought, possibly naively, that pads were made to wear out and be replaced long before a disc would. Any thoughts please?
 
Could be as much from corrosion as use - especially on the inside faces. My 2004 986 with 52k on the clock is on at least its second set of discs and third set of pads.

My 2013 Cayenne diesel went in last week for a service and I've been told the same. It has done 37,000 miles. I took it for a second opinion and it was confirmed. I was told that if I change just the pads, the new pads would outlast the discs and therefore they needed to change both. Not what I had expected. Had a couple of quotes upwards of £1500!
 
Well, at least your responses have made me feel slightly better. I have been quoted £1800 for the parts and labour. Not what I was expecting but that's the price of owning this great vehicle!

[FONT=calibri"]In about 2009 I was told (by a Porsche centre) that the pads and discs need replacing on my S. I asked how worn they were, I was told 75% so as I had 25% remaining I decided not to have them changed. I was told the same again 2 years later and again 4 years later. 6 years on I am still on the same pads and discs and have recently passed the MOT. I don’t do lots of miles, but clearly the work didn’t need doing. The car has now done over 70k on the original disks and pads. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Thanks for your responses guys, all very helpful. The work was done yesterday. Cost close to £1800 and didn't check the wear myself as I, probably naively, trust my OPC!! In future I will check carefully myself, especially in the light if your comments Swiftus!! Interestingly I had my MOT 3 weeks ago and there were no comments!! I won't be so trusting/stupid in future
 
Likewise Swiftus I am on my original Discs 2003 car 55K miles
I have only ever had the pads renewed and now on 2nd 3rd set.
If you go back far enough we never ever renewed discs and when it was legal
we had them machined down.

I have a Cayenne S with 57,000 on the clock , a 2003 model. At the last service at Porsche in early 2013 , was told the discs and pads need replacing at 80% wear. I would see and feel the wear myself but as I only do 3-4k miles a year I've left it. Since then I've passed two MOT's with no advisories. The car still stops really well!
 
If it is wear and not corrosion,there is no harm in driving till the light comes on.. makes sense to maximise wear on such an expensive set of parts.When the light does come on you can still drive it a few miles as there is a small reserve of wear,maybe its because i am tight fisted but that's what i do with my 06 MY "S".With such big brakes and normal gentle driving the last bit of material can last years depending on miles driven.
 
Correction to my earlier reply.
It is still legal to machine down the brake discs as long as they are not taken down below
the recommended thickness.The machine shop knows the tolerances .
