Brake Pads????/ Track day....

Hi modding fans.
For all you track day runners ????

What brake pads are you running + why ????

What amounts of fade are you encounting "if any" ??

Are you using 928,S4 callipers????

Im just putting together a 968 track day "weapon" fitted with 030 kit + was wondering what pads you chaps were running.?????

PS the discs are 928,S4 solids, so i dont crack drilled ones ,, also they are heaps cheaper......

We always get varying answers with this one [;)]

I always use standard OEM pads and disks (928 S4), usually Pagid and Zimmerman and have never had any fade or brake problems. I do run a 3" duct from the front bumper to the centre of the disks

The front pads generally last 4 track days and the disks about 12 (plus 20,000 miles) and generally cost me £50 each

I have Andrews old SE/928 S4 calipers with drilled discs.

Using standard pads, I managed to boil my AP551 Racing Brake Fluid within two half hour sessions at Snetterton and had to bleed the brakes at lunch time. Many thanks to Tony, Paul and Andrew for their assistance - well Tony and Paul any way [;)].

Looking at the price of the AP551 (£5 for 500ml i.e. cheap) I will try something else next time as perhaps it isn't cutting it. I have heared good things of EBC BF307+ and also Castrol SRF, but then at £38 +VAT for 1ltr of Castrol it should be damn nigh indestructable.

The 220 Turbo does have vents within the front bumpers, and deflector plates on the struts, so these should help feed air into the centre of the disc. Apparently these were omitted from later models, so perhaps they didn't work?

I was also running the 928 style wheels, those big disc things with minimal holes, so I guess these didn't help my cause much either.

The only good thing about having your brakes let you down is you can then strive to improve them. [8|]

At risk of hijacking this thread for 968 owners I add my bit.

Using Zimmermans and std Pagids I have failed to get any fade, I am probably not trying hard enough!

I track with 16" Cup 1's and they let lots of air through -- this together with the deflector plates seems to keep things cool. I have no plans to change anything, preferring to keep going around the track rather than chasing better brake performance.

I do use Castrol Synthetic brake fluid -- forgotten the actual type. Also have s'steel hoses which IMO give really good feel.

I use castrol synthetic fluid as well (from Halfords) and whilst I can get the brakes to fade, they seem to recover quite quickly without need for bleeding.

So far ive done the hoses " stainless" braided. + got ATE blue fluid in.
With no probs on the fade front ...
Just wanted the ultimate braking..........[;)]

Without going for a full spec bespoke AP Racing application Andrews set up
928GTS Disks and 993 Bi-Turbo callipers
is about as good as you are going to get on a 944, or derivative [;)]

As I am sure you know, the 993 Turbo calipers are also known as "Big Reds" (because they are red). The same callipers are available off the 928 GTS, but these are black and hence known as "Big Blacks".

Hi All,

Im looking at upgrading my brakes and was curious about the 928 brake option.. is it just the disks and pads or do i need to be changing my master cylinder or anything else? Aprt from the fluid and hoses. Any changes on the back or is it just the front?

Lali, your S2 brakes are the same setup as the 220bhp Turbo. If you want to fit the 928S4 brakes as used on the 250bhp Turbo you will need new callipers, disks, pads and also some calliper spacers so that it will all line up correctly. John Sims has done thisand if you search back through his previous posts you will find a very good writeup with pics that he did.

No other changes need to be made, and your rear calliper is already the same as the 250 Turbo.

I have found that my S2 brakes feel a lot sharper and need less effort at the pedal than my larger Turbo brakes, so unless you are planning lots of really hot track driving where you need the extra thickness and heat sink of the larger setup, I would leave well alone.
