Brake pads

My pads are getting low, and with some track days booked and a trip to the Ring soon I need to get some new ones fitted soon.
Are Pagid yellows as good as their price suggests?
Can anyone suggest any other alternatives that are maybe a bit easier on my wallet[:)]
The car is used 95% on the track ( with the exception of driving to the ring ) so I'm not that bothered about the pads squealing, dust or needing to get to temp.
My car is running 993 turbo big red fronts with MO30 rears.
Big Dave, what do you run on yours as they seemed to work well when I see you at Oulton.

Cheers

Kev

Kev,

I am now running Mintex 1144/55 in my hill climb car and I am very impressed. Mintex/Pagid are the same company and I get the feeling there is not alot of difference between the pads other than colours and price. I have used the 55's on the track and they performed as well as Pagid Blues IMO. It may be worth thinking about Mintex 1155s or 1166's?

It is also worth giving Mintex/Pagid a ring as their technical department are very helpful.

Thanks Peter,

Do the Mintex work out much cheaper than the Pagid as I got quoted circa £400 for front and rears

Kev

I think 1155's for the front are about £120.00 rears about £70.00 1166's will be more but not that much.

Kev,
Are you sure youve got 993TT fronts.??? The rears are the same on all 968,s weather M030 or not....
I "might" be able to help you out on some pads...!! Depends on a few things....!!!!
Im currently running Pagid Oranges all round, [at Oulton],,[I have the "BigReds" fitted up front..]...but have used the Blues all round to VERY good effect...+ would recomend them in a flash...

Hi Dave,

I thought they were 993TT but maybe not. Well they are big and they are red [:)] They were probably something else that got sold to JP before I collected the car [:D]

What is the main difference between the Pagid yellow/orange/blue and for a novice like me am I really going to be able to feel the difference.

Cheers

Kev - hi

Big question that. Start by looking here:
http://www.pagiduk.com/material-specifications.php

From that you can see temp & friction info for all the types of Pagid pad. You can them make choices about upper temp limits and friction levels. eg generally best to have a low friction pad in the rear and equal or slightly higher friction pad at the front. Also, if you are prone to overheating brakes, (say if racing hard) then you will need versions with higher temp resistance. As you say the Pagid come at a price though.

NB Be advised that higher performance pads might squeak a bit at low speeds - I do not have a problem with that, some may hate it.

As a rule a 968 with everything working properly plus half decent pads AND with a high temp brake fluid - will not IMO suffer fade. This is what we all want to avoid.

Cheapest way forward if you are thinking of the odd tracking is probably EBC Yellows on all 4 corners (do not be tempted to use EBC Red or Green for track use). Not had any proper experience of Mintex but they will probably be cheaper than Pagid - although, as Peter said, made within the same group!

Stu on here is a mine of knowledge on such things (he worked for Mintex) -- give him a ring at K300 and chat through all the above.

Kev.
The car used to have the 993 callipers, BUT ive got them now + youve got the M030 caliper. How do i know. I changed them...+ did the deal with Chris...[;)][:D][;)][:D]....The calipers were FULLY refurbed before we swopped them over, this included new seals + plate lift removed then painted red...
Theres NOTHING wrong with the M030 caliper, thats what Paul F uses in the PCGB champs. [ its the biggest he can use,,, PCGB regs.]...
Like he said. So long as youve got the right grade friction material + GOOD fluid + braideds , which im sure you have anyway, if i know chris , he had the best of everything...
I " might" have some pads if your interested...!!!!!!

Thanks Dave,

So I have MO30 front and rear, is that right?
I'll have to have a word with Pazzer about selling off the crown jewels[;)] Have you got any more of my parts that I should know about[:(]

Thanks for the info Paul.
What pads do you run in the Orange car with the MO30 or is it a trade secret[;)]?
I had the brake fluid renewed a while ago with AP racing fluid. I presume that this is ok.
Is the squeeling that bad with the higher performance pads?
Sorry for the interrogation

Kev

RS 14 Black at the front (good bite & high temp perf) and RS 4-4 Orange in the back (low friction). Not a trade secret BUT I guess one of the most expensive options! Have tried Performance Friction 01's and Porterfields in the front as well as Pagid RS 29's - found them all to be quality products. Keep to orange or blues in the rear though.

Thanks for that Paul.

Is the AP fluid ok? Why only orange or blue in the rear and not blacks the same as the front?

Kev. Have heard that AP racing fluid is a top performer.

I have had advice and experienced what happens if rear brakes have pads with too much friction or bite. It will upset the balance of the car, when we really want the front brakes to dominate as that is where all the weight is. Hence the use of Pagid Orange or Blue pads in the rear (as they are low friction).

NB Note that the fronts I use are RS-14 Blacks AND not the lower spec RS 4-2-1 Blacks which have low temp capability and low friction and IMO should not be used anywhere on a heavy car like a 968 when used in anger!

Now I just need you to sign this indemnity form ....................... !!!!!!!

Many thanks for that Paul, thats very helpful.
Unlucky at the weekend by the way. I'll try and come and see you in action @ Brands.

I've got Pagid blues fitted front and rear - had them on my 968 for a few years now and they're a fantastic versatile pad. Bite is really strong from cold, stopping power is immense, they really are as good as the hype IMO. I've only done a couple of trackdays with them, as well as about 25,000 road miles, and there's still plenty of pad left - enough to do it all over again, I reckon.

They do squeal, produce alot of horrible black dust and cost quite a bit, but for the performance, they're definitely worth it. Think the yellows are ceramic based, so should be even better (and may give off a little less dust, as they're ceramic, not carbon based)
