Brake Squeak!

Guest

New member
Hopefully someone can help.....

I have an annoying brake squeak that I notice at very low speeds (<5mph) coming from the nearside front (I think.) It sounds like a metal-on-metal rub rather than a grind, and by the rhythm of the noise I would assume it occurs at a particular point of the wheels revolution.

This is something I have noticed for the 3 years I have owned the car. I have had new discs, new pads and new wheel bearings and have had the car checked for this problem twice by JZ. They can find nothing wrong.

Indeed, when my car was up on a ramp having brake hoses replaced I spun the nearside front wheel by hand and it turned freely without noise and no binding.

Has anyone got any ideas what this could be? Could it be a sticky brake caliper?

I have a very very slight pull to the left in the car which is most noticeable at 60-80mph, despite having had my suspension rebuilt and geometry set no fewer than 4 times! Could this be associated with the brake squeak?

Help & opinions appreciated...

Sounds like what mine was doing before I re-built the brakes !!

This sounds very much like a problem I have now. But it only occures after driving for some time - so I assume it is heat related.
I cannot get it to show the symptoms when cold.
As you say it only occures below 5mph but it does go as soon as I apply the brakes lightly. I also feel the noise (always the same frequency) through the steering wheel.
I have had the brakes off, checked the calipers for sticking, checked for the correct alignment of the pistions but it is still there.
Now I live with it and just apply the brakes very slightly to stop the noise, which seems to work for 15 seconds or so and usually long enough before I speed up again.
I think it may be a natural resonance of the caliper/pad and disc with wear, which may only be reduced when everything is renewed.
Not much consolation but it is nice to know I may not be alone!!

Cheers
