Brake Squeal

I intermittently get brake squeal from one of my rear disks. It only happens when travelling around town slowly (bit embarrassing as it gets people looking for the wrong reason!) and not at out of town speeds.

At last service I asked for the disks and pads to be checked and was told they were fine.

While checking through all the old receipts etc for something else the other day I notice the previous owner had asked his mechanic to look into it too. Any ideas ? Is the only way to hopefully cure it once and for all new discs and pads or might it be something else ?

Try coppaslip smeared generously on the back of the pad and a little bit on the edge of the pad backing plate where it slides against the caliper plate (obviously taking care not to get any on the pad itself!). This seems to be more effective than the adhesive anti-squeal pads.

A good clean with a pressure washer can make a huge difference. I did this to my fronts, and it has lasted a good couple of months thus far (probably about 1,000 miles.) Easy and cheap.
