Brake upgrade advice

Hi,

I am probably going to get shot down in flames for this, but here goes;

is it possible to upgrade standard (ie black calipers) brakes on a 1995 C2 to proper Porsche Big Reds?

I do rea;ise that the turbo brakes are much bigger and that it may mean new wheels too...

Anyone done this or have any views?[&:]

Lots of people have done this ... in fact our very own register secretary Maurice recently did this. There is also an article on doing this in the 993 section of Porsche Post this week.

of course you can......

I haven't but have added over time Techart Brake Cooling Ducts, Dot 5.1 Brake fluid & Pagid Blue Brake Pads and regularly blasted out all the brake dust stuck in the drilled hoeslof the brake discs....

which as a combined combo have certainly improved the brakes to a level that everyone has been impressed with.....

an inexpensive fix.... fluid and pad upgrade and clean out the rotors !!

chops will be along with the tech stuff

I should point out that for driving on the road you don't need this upgrade as the standard brakes are up to the job in hand.

The other option is to paint your existing calipers red but I'll get put against the wall and shot by the purists for suggesting it.

Does anybody have any suggestions on the best/easiest way to clean out the holes in the discs. I can't see through most of the holes in the front discs!!!!!!!

not keen on the drill in case I damage the disc....


but rather I use the air hose at my local garage..... (old style, not the latest digital set pressure type) very effective at blasting out the dust and takes much much less time....... just be careful not to inhale !!!
 
The drill does not need to be 'running'...
Depending on how it was since last cleared out, just an HSS drill bit (ideally with quick-change hex end as it's easier to twist in your hand) to run through both sides. Long annular plasterboard nails also work!
A quick blast as Sundeep says afterward with an airline will clear the debris which is surprising on both my Audi and 996 (used to do the same on my 993).
Definitely a job for one of those ' I've got too much time on my hands type days ' !!

good chance you will snap the drill bit if drill is running...hand held drill bit or garden wire if the wheels are still on the car is the answer.

air line may sound like a good idea...but you are unlikely to get the inner holes totally clear...the outside face of the disc may appear clear while the inner is still clogged..

curiously I have some carbon/metal pads (£500 worth) fitted to my car when i bought it,,,these do not clog the holes in the disc at all even after a track day,,,the downside is that when you apply the brakes it sounds like someone has just stabbed a cat!
