Brake upgrade for M030's - increased pad area

Afternoon All !

I thought I'd share this potential 'upgrade' for those who might feel the need (ie track cars or racers) to increase the swept area of the pads on M030 or Medium Blacks for a 944Turbo.

This find came about by accident when a certain supplier of Mintex pads sent me the wrong ones and I've been using them for sometime.

So, the 944 Turbo S and later Turbos all had the so called Medium Blacks (largest caliper/disc combo within a 16" wheel) as fitted to 928 S4's, 959's etc.
The Large Black calipers will only fit under 17" rim and I believe were fitted to 968CS M030's and also to the 928 GTS.

So looking through the Mintex online catalogue, the standard M030 944 Pads (bigger size to the rears, unlike S2 or early 220 Turbos):

For the Larger pads:

Looking at these in detail you'll see the height of the pad ie between the stainless caliper plates is identical (0.1mm different).

Its the swept area that is noticeably different

Hopefully you'll be able to see this photo comparison of the 2 pads side by side:

The only drawback about this is the pad is sits slightly proud of the disk and you end up with a 'lip' on the pad, as it sits ~ 1.5mm further out on a radius from centre of the axle = easily solved with an angle grider on the pad.

Anyhow, hope someone might find this useful ?

Oh I forgot to mention, the other draw back = no slot for the wear sensor = not an issue for me as I removed these sometime ago....
