Brake vibration dampers

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the "brake vibration damper" is on the 4-piston calipers.
Some time back i found the "remains" of one on one of my rear calipers which caused a knocking sound whenever i touched the brakes.
I removed it as i thought it was an "anti-squeal" shim and the brake then worked fine.I know there's non fitted on the passenger side front on mine but should they be fitted all round? And by not having them on would this contribute to occasional juddering when applying the brakes. They're listed on the PET cd as vibration dampers but i was under the impression that they were only fitted if you're brakes squealed.

They are intended to stop brake squeal. I'm not sure how but I don't bother with them and use liberal amounts of Copaslip on the back of the pads (not the front!!!) and have never had a problem with squeal - altough my new EBC yellow stuff pads do squeal at times but I think thats because they are a performance fast road/track pad.
