brake warning light

I have noticed that the brake warning light seems to be taking a bit longer to go out than usual ie- 2 or 3 minutes rather than a few seconds as it used to. Is this something I need to worry about?

Thanks

Mike, I see that you have a C4S so it could be the high pressure boost pump starting to fail - if the pump is struggling to reach the necessary pressure initially the warning light may stay on longer. Mine failed to the extent that it began leaking and the warning light started to come on intermitantly whilst driving. Cost of the new pump alone was nearly £1k. Check in the drivers manual to make sure of what the light is first though - I mistakenly took my warning as the pad wear one and ignored it initially as the pads had just been changed.

Mike, this happened to me some years ago (?7 or 8?), although the delay in the warning light going out was c. 30 - 45 seconds rather than the 2 -3 minutes you mention. I was still under warranty (and the dealership was HR Owen rather than under Porsche ownership) and the pump was replaced. What struck me was that after it was replaced, the light was still taking c. 30 seconds to go out on some occassions. It is still like it today, and if I haven't used the car for a few weeks it can still take c. a minute to go out.

Two minutes does sound a long time though ....

Seem to recall battery condition may have an impact.

If the battery is low it doesn't seem to energise the pump prior to starting the car.

Yes it can take some time. It's an electric pump that builds up the pressure, if your battery is run down then it will take that little bit longer. Blipping the throttle so that the alternator send that extra bit of current is often sufficient to put the light out.

This is a common problem with 964s, and there are lots of solutions short of the £1k pump relacement. There is lots of expertise over on the 964 forum - Yes, all of the above is true: re low battery power, but leaky seals are also a common cause. These can be replaced nowadays, at a fraction of the cost of a new pump.

I speak as an ex 964 C4 owner. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the advice. It only seems to be a problem if I haven't used the car for a day or more. I will see if it gets any worse

Mike
