Brake warning light

Came on , on the wife's 996 , she rang Silverstone immediately and they said get Porsche Service out , which she did . They could find no fault so they advised it was ok and best take it to Silverstone for a check . This was last wednesday and the warning light went out on thursday . Still we had booked it in for today and they have said they can find no fault or any record of the light coming on , so its ok . Has anyone else had this occur ??

They sorted the wheel scuff as well [:D]

3 weeks ago, I had the ABS light and PSM warning lights come on after I had power sprayed under the arches. Two days later they went out and have never come back on. Probably just got water in a connection. Could something similar have happened in your case. That is, you got a bad connection that has put itself right?

In any case, if it comes on again, have it checked out.

yeah same thing happened to me. Had brake light come one after driving thru really wet weather. Never came back after.

There is a known issue that can cause both the ABS and PSM lights to come on simultaneously on earlier 996s. The switch by the brake pedal that actuates the brake lights is notoriously unreliable (I had 2 go on my previous car, a '99 C4). This means you have no brake lights whatsoever and also that the PSM doesn't recognise you have started braking (it takes its cue from the pedal switch) and the warning lights come on.

What happens is that the insides of the pedal swich disintegrate and then become intermittent (warning lights on then off etc.). Thankfully the part is only about £7 (IIRC) and is very easy to fit (twist, pull, remove plug, put plug on new switch, push, twist, done) if a complete bitch to get to as it's so far under the dash!!!

Worth checking out before someone runs into the back of you.......

Cheers Ian for the heads up. But I took the car up to the Lakes at the weekend ona Porsche meet and we took the cars up the Kirkstone Pass (almost 4x4 roads).
It never gave me any problems on the entire 330 mile trip. So I am fairly certain it was just wet connections tat have put themselves right after drying out.

thanks for that , we've been to collect and all seems ok . Will keep an eye on it though .

My brake switch also went on my boxster tip, not only did it mean I had no brake lights, but the tip lever kept sticking in Park and Drive...real nightmare.......OPC didnt spot the problem, independent did, simple brake switch!
