Brakes fading

Has anyone else experienced their brakes fading on the circuit? My car is a C2S, 6 months old now. I first experienced this in July when the car had done about 6k road miles and the conditions were wet, so they were not getting too hot. The effect is a lumpy brake pedal just when you want it to bite, a bit like the ABS activating. I've had it checked out by Porsche who say the pads, disks and tyres are fine, although I know the Porsche Pro's only let their cars do a few k miles on a set of brakes. I'm not a hard driver out there (I'm usually the one who is being overtaken by everyone else) but I enjoy it.

Are you sure you are experiencing brake fade - as from your brief description it sounds like the ABS system is cutting in?
Fade occurs when increasing pedal effort fails to retard the vehicle - it's caused by excessive heat.

Yeah, you're right, I'm not describing this properly. Technically it is not fading but they certainly make you want to get off the circuit! They get noisy, I guess its more of a rumble. They still work fine but come off for a bit and let them cool and they are fine for a few laps. I've had it twice, on 2 separate occasions. We had a more regular trackdayer check them out and he thought they weren't right too. I've been in other 997 and Caymans on the track and not heard/felt it in them. So I've had Porsche check my brakes and tyres and even told them to 'change something' but they say they are fine and safe and theres no need to change anything. Of course they can't test them under track-like braking. I've spoken with PCGB customer services and they say they've done all they can and they are fine..... so there's 3 of us who think we're nuts now! I guess we'll have to book another trackday to check our sanity....?

Sounds like brake pad deposits on the disks - my 997S never used to do it, but then I never tracked it.

However, my E46 M3 used to do it after any hard road use (say 10 miles worth). The brakes would give off a loud rumbling, the wheel would shake and the pedal modulate furiously.

I used to let them cool right down then do 2 or 3 really hard slows from say 50-60mph and it used to clear them off.
 
Pad deposits or glazing in my opinion; I was advised never to trackday on the std pads as they will suffer very quickly - get some EBC yellows like I have , better bite (even on normal road use) no noise no dust - best money I've spent on mine so far.

I think you need to get a clued-up indy or a high performance specialist to look at this. It sounds like the system needs a thorough check for pad material degradation, rotor run-out/glazing etc.

I would strongly recommend you do this BEFORE you plan your next track day. It may just be that the rotors need de-glazing but it's better to be safe etc. [:(]

What makes you think it isn't the ABS cutting in?? Espeically in the wet. The ABS light doesn't illuminate on the dash when your ABS cuts in like the way traction control light does. A lumpy feel to the pedal along with a graunchy noise sounds like classic ABS so why automatically discount it as the cause when it is probably the most probable cause?

 
1st how long do you go out for on the track? Anything more than 20mns and you will be giving your brakes / tyres something to complain about.
2nd, you might have something on the fluid side of things, did they change the brake fluid? If you get it regularly, I would say it could be heat.
3rd, I do not know if it is possible on the standard steels, but you might have cracked them by overdoing it at one point. I replaced mine with Pagid R42s and destroyed them like that: they worked fine normally, but put any heat in them (i.e. only on circuit) and they vibrated badly and where horribly noisy.

Best people to talk to are JZM or Parr, I would get them to change fluid + braided brake lines.
