Brakes (keep an eye on them)

I felt my brakes were getting a bit poor so set about investing in some new disks and pads all round. You can see all that in an earlier thread.

Well I finally got round to getting them fitted. In the end I had a local garage do the fitting as just didn't have the time. I did manage to paint the hub part of the disk with VHT (Very High Temperature) Paint as the Zimmerman disks I bought weren't painted at all (like the Porsche parts are).

Believe it or not, I've seen much worse, and it is absolutely amazing how bad they can get without you being able to feel it through the pedal.
 
Looks as though the inside pads had worn right down at some stage and scored the discs. Thanks for the photos - interesting to see.
 
Yes amazing how the face of the discs look ok and backs are really rusty just
changed my fronts for same reason

Could be. I bought the car from an OPC when it was 18 months old with 18k on the clock and the disks and pads looked quiet new at the that time, but I didn't really look that hard they might have just had a relatively easy life racking up 1k a month on the motorway.

When they came off the front pads all had about 4-5mm left on them (inside and out). It will be 5yrs old in January and has now done 31k so either way I don't suppose they've lasted too badly considering the way I drive it. Although It always had a run out after washing to dry the disks which helps.

Even on the way home from the garage tonight it felt way better, you don't realise how the performance of the brakes slowly degrades

Not heard of that paint before - I'm assuming it's the whole part of the disc - apart from the faces obviously - that you're talking about? Can you pick that stuff up at Halfords?

I used Hycote VHT the Aluminium version. Seems to be available at most motor factors

I just masked the centre with tape then used tape and paper on the disc. I put tape roughly over the edge then run a sharp blade on the edge to make a nice clean cut at both the centre and disc.

Before you start make sure you give them a good clean with brake cleaner and I gave the surfaces to be painted a light rub with sandpaper to key them.

I masked the first then sprayed it outside and then while it dried (touch dry in about 15 mins) I masked the next one then painted that and put another coat on the first one and so on. Giving them four coats in total and there's still plenty left in the tin.

As for durability I have no idea yet but I'll be keeping an eye on it and report back if it all flakes of in a week.
 
Andy - thanks for the Thread and all the reseach you have undertaken - most helpful. Whilst my 01 C2 was on the ramp having the exhaust fitted I took a look at the inside of my front disks and they were in a terrible state. Like yours the front facing surface looked and felt fine. I can't say I have noticed any loss of braking power!! Anyway I need to replace the fronts but was wondering if I should do front and rear together to retain 'balance'?

Has your paint stayed on? Are you still happy with your choice of discs and pads?

Why would the insides wear more than the outsides and why the fronts quicker than the rears?

I was told very little cooling air gets to the inside of the fronts which are much worse that the rears on mine! ! Not sure thats the real cause though - HELP [8|]

If the rear disks and pads have plenty of wear left you don't need to change them. My rear pads had plenty of meat left but the insides of the discs were rough (although not as bad as the fronts)

Looking at Marque 21 They've perhaps had to go to a different supplier for the rear discs as the price has gone up from £46 each to £63 so it's now over £200 for a full kit for the rear.

After over a month now the paint appears to be holding up well. I did treat the wheels to a good clean and a coat of Rim Wax on Friday and put some on the hubs as well.

It stops way better than it did before, much more progressive. When they were getting bad I could feel the ABS coming on in the last few feet on approaches to wet roundabouts. It would stop but it was becoming increasing hard to be smooth.
