Brakes recommendation for 996 please

Hi i am a first time Porsche owner with a 996 1999 - after having the cars brakes looked at (by Kwikfit) they have advised that I will need discs and pads on all four corners within the next 12 month or so. Have been quoted about £2000 by a Porsche dealer. I have a competant car mechanic as a friend who is willing to help do the work for me. I have looked on the internet for discs and shoes but not sure what to get as there appears to be many versions at various prices all claiming to be OEQ. I intend to use the car mainly as a road car with a couple of track days each year. Could anyone suggest a make that they have found to be good in their experience and where they got them from - Thanks Peter

Our preferred brand is Brembo. In our opinion, their standard product is better quality (visually, quality of materials and quality in application) than others, including OE, and you have the benefit of knowing they also manufacture the brake calipers too.

I believe Sebro were and Textar were suppliers to Porsche, but this will depend on year of manufacture.

Your discs and pads when the car was new were SHW and Textar.

You have 3 options really, Sebro/Textar, Pagid or as Lee says Brembo

You will need shims and sensors so you're looking at just under £500 for option 1, under £400 for option 2 and just over £400 for option 3

Porsche brakes are simple to work on, easy DIY

I doubt you'll need sensors unless the brake pad warning light has appeared, otherwise just reuse the existing ones.

Buy some Textar pads on eurocarparts and fit the discs and pads yourself in under an hour for the front axle. Lots of YouTube 'how to' videos, pretty simple.

Hi Peter,

I replaced ALL discs, pads, shims & sensors for around £600 last year..... it is an easy job if you can DIY & I think approx 4.5 hours from an indie....

I purchased Sebro discs & Textar pads which come highly recommended

Personally I would get someone other than kwik fit to tell me the condition of my brakes before doing anything... what does your car mechanic friend think of them?

Porsche recommend a new set of caliper bolts. I think the last time I got some they were about £12 each from the OPC but I might be wrong with the price.

Just got mine all done by Northway - obviously more expensive than doing it myself but it did save me time/effort plus I have the peace of mind that it's been done properly [:D]

Cost was roughly £1200 or so.
