Brakes

Hi folks
I recently purchased a 993 C4 from a non-porsche garage in Wakefield. I had it checked over by a so called Porsche specialist who happened to be local to the seller. The check showed up a few niggles which were duly addressed by the seller prior to my purchase.

Since purchasing the car I have so far discovered a few slight irritations such as the wheel brace & compressor pump missing, oil level low etc which i thought they might have picked up on.

Anyway a slightly more annoying issue is that the brake warning light has illuminated for the last few mornings along with a short (maybe 10 seconds) groaning sound from the front which sounds like some sort of pump. The noise also occurs quite regularly while driving (even when not braking) but most often under heavy braking. Additionally if i stop the car and pump the brake pedal a few times the warning light comes on again temporarily along with the pump sound (the nearest thing i could compare it to would be a distant fog horn) Is all of this normal or do i have a serious problem ?

The car was purchased with a 1 month warranty so i only have a fortnight left to contact the dealer with any issues.

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers in advance
Karl.

I take it that you know how to read the oil level correctly? Engine running, well warm and idled for at least thirty seconds?

The noise from the front is the compressor for the brakes, unlike the C2, the C4 doesn't have a servo. As the pressure reduces it automatically cuts in to boost it. In the morning it has to run for a while as the pressure drops overnight. If it stops making the noise you're in bother [:)].

You didn't say which warning light was coming on but I had a similar situation with the brake pressure warning light coming on a while ago. It turned out to be the reservoir being too full after a service. Not exactly sure what it was doing but it was possibly flooding the contacts in the cap. It stopped when I drained some fluid out. I don't remember pumping the pedal so I'm not sure about that bit but I would have expected the compressor to start. The brake reservoir is situated on the right hand side of the boot looking from the front.

Any help?

Thanks Clyde that is a great help and i feel a little less worried about the situation now.
I am aware of the unique oil checking procedure, however when i checked the oil, the car had just been driven about 60 miles and the engine was kept running. Even then there was no sign of oil on the stick, nor on the guage. It took a couple of litres to top it up. I have since discovered that max oil capacity is approx 12 litres, however they will run ok with as little as 6 litres so im sure there was no harm done. Just annoying if anything.

I feel a little more at ease now you have mentioned the brake compressor. For peace of mind i'm going to get my local porsche specialist (Spec Cars Malton) to give it a once over so i can address any issues before my warranty expires.

Cheers
Karl.
