Brakes...

997S is just coming up to four years old (27,000 miles) and therefore due MOT and service. Needs some rear tyres and probably some attention to brakes (no pads replaced to date). Bank account is worried []

I had an indi replace coil packs about three months ago and they mentioned the brakes. They gave me a quote to skim the discs and replace pads with original Porsche parts. Indi said that there is plenty of meat on the discs to skim them but that the official Porsche service centres do not do it.

Anyone any experience of this or any views. Alternatively approx cost of replacing brakes and pads at Porsche service centre if I go this route. And how often would you expect pads and discs both need replacing rather than just the pads?

Thanks and very interesting - the indi has been recommended on this forum - if I give him the benefit of the doubt, he is out of date with his information, if I am cynical, he is trying to drum up business.

Did you have it done recently and did the OPC suggest skimming rather than replacing disks?

Nanking or Hankook?[:D] Do they do mail order, Chris? £240 odd for 305's sounds great for any N rated.
Back on thread it would seem the perceived wisdom around here is to go for something with more bite on the pads front. Certainly when I get through the first set I will go for something Pagid-like[;)]

I've just received a quote from OPC Silverstone for rear brake skim and they want £170, thats including labour & the caliper bolts. Just out of interest, were you charged a similar amount?

Colchester OPC skimmed disks on my previous 2 boxters - so back to 03 OPC's were doing this.

Breaks - Hmm, basic breaks are good but if you are caning it or simply following Clive/Gary or the usual Turbo mod you'll eventually want better.

Pagid or EBC Yellows on the Pads are a good start - they seem to get a lot more out of the disks. Changing the break fluid to a more robust one also helps. In fact changing the standard break fluid regularly makes a difference ( I changed mine at about 16k miles and noticed quite a difference) - this also helps with the dreaded warranty but the Pagids/EBC's are much better.

When my current disks have had it I will look for something slightly more substantial.
