The brakes on my 2.7 seem pretty ordinary.

Certainly not much bite to them, and even stanping hard doesn' t disturb the paperclips in my oddments tray much.

A friend of mine also has a 2.7 and tends to agree.

I' ve only done 1000 miles and don' t push the car very hard.

Will there be any improvement as they wear in - or do I just need to specify a softer brake pad on replacement.

This seems to be a common problem. I too noticed this when I changed from a Merc (that had Emergency Brake Assist that really brakes the car hard in an emergency). I' ve had to do an emergency stop twice and the Boxster brakes stopped the car in an instant.

My theory is that under normal driving conditions the brakes appear to be quite weak but when they' re needed in an emergency they are very strong. I think that the acceleration of the brake pedal plays a part in the power of the braking system. Under normal driving conditions, pressing the brake pedal causes low acceleration and the braking system correspondingly provides ' normal' power. In an emergency, the brake pedal accelerates very quickly and the system will increase the braking power.

Also, you' ve only done 1000 miles so the brakes haven' t bedded in yet. Give it another couple of thousand miles and you' ll notice an improvement.
 
I think the feel beiles the power. I have a 2.7 and have done several trackdays.. The power is there believe me.. Dont confuse pressing them hard for lack of power... 117 to a hairpain 20 in a few yards works well!..

I also think that you do have to use them hard to get the feel as with some pads, you can get a glaze forming on the surface.
I am going to try EBC greenstuff next..
 
I have a 2.7,done 7000miles.I think this car has the best breaks of any car I,ve ever driven.In fact its the best car Ive ever driven.
 
There was nothing wrong with the brakes fitted on my 2.7 and I' ve never had anyone complain to me either. I have experienced a little bit of fading after a hard day on the track but otherwise they were more than adequate.

I now have a set of cross-drilled discs and green EBC pads as the originals were getting a little thin. They also stop the car in quick order and give off a lot less dust.

I am thinking of doing the same on my 2.7. Did you put cross drilled and green EBC all round or just on the front.

this is an interesting point. I have always felt that all the controls were very well weighted, and also gave good feed back. Perhaps if you are used to strong servos the brake pedal may seem unresponsive. On the other hand, if you are used to a very proportional response you may agree the brakes are about perfect.

Actually, road tests of Boxsters rate the brakes as best in class, in fact the Boxster stops slightly shorter than the S (but not after many attempts)
 
Maybe a dumb question but.... Is getting cross drilled diss for the 2.7 give them the same ones or equivalent as the S?
 
The ones I got are not the same as the ' S' but I know of no reason why you couldn' t fit them.

I' m pretty sure the S discs would be too large for 16" wheels.
I have 17' s and there is VERY little clearance betwen caliper and wheel (as I found to my cost when a stone got wedged between the 2 - machining a lovely groove in the wheel.[:mad:]
 
[;)] Its just dust and damp from the car standing unused for a while being polished off by the pads. My Discs even rust in the garage when the car is stored over the winter slightly. If the OPC found no problem and if you chreck there is a good amount of disc pad left I would not worry.[:D]

Thanks for your message, you really have put my mind at rest.

Now, for a non-techie, how do you check the discs - what am I looking for? The car has done about 13,500 miles in the last 16 months - not hard use but quite a bit of motorway driving so brake use has not been too much.

If I look at the discs, what am I expected to see?

Sorry this seems such a basic question, but I am a lawyer and have no head for anything mechanical. I use my car for enjoyment and leave virtually everything to a garage.

On a slightly different note, is it possible to increase the level of illumination on the radio? My booklet is silent on this?

I seem to have the same problem , apparently its just being a porsche " virgin" and you just have to push them very hard
 
Strongly recommend you DON’T use Porsche as their prices are outrageous.

Have a look at Design911. PCGB members get 5% discount
 
I got Pagids fitted to my 986 by a local garage You can get them from the likes off ECP and PARTS 4 U they do discounts all the time just put in your reg number and will point you to parts for your model
 
Thanks for the replys do most people paint the wheel boss part of the discs as most seem to be bare metal and that won't look good through the wheel
 
I've tried that but eventually it all discolours but for a while will look great!
I don't bother now. Mine came from Eurocarparts, excellent.
