braking problems

...was told a couple of months ago that the discs on my MY06 997c4s were 50/60% worn. I concluded that they still therefore had 50/40% more life in them. I now have quite a noticeable vibration on braking from relatively high speed(80/85 mph). could this be disc wear? I had the pads replaced 2 months ago and I only do roughly 500 miles per month. I wondered about having the discs skimmed to smooth off the braking surface ... of course OPC Glasgow want to replace all four. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Are all four worn are is it just the fronts? Most braking wear occurs to the fronts so usually they wear out at least twice as quickly as the rears. I am no expert but if the discs are 50 to 60% worn and you get a judde from the front when braking then replace then. If you have a Porsche warranty then get a set from the OPC and use your members discount as this keeps the Warranty valid. They are simple to change yourself or use a good local garage if you would rather avoid paying OPC labour rates. when a disk is 100% worn it no longer exists. Tyres and brakes keep you safe. Don't let either wear out past their serviceable life.

In the grand scheme of owning a 997 replacing the steel discs is probably one of the cheaper items and if yours are the originals then probably worth doing at five years old. Skimming them may remove the judder but, of course, will make the discs even thinner, reduce their life further and make them a bit more prone to cracking from the holes. When you had the pads replaced a few months back didn't whoever did it (presumably not Glasgow PC) comment on the state of the discs? What do they feel like if you run a fingernail across? Then there is the inside face which is difficult to see. Or they could be warped in which case skimming is unlikely to be of any use.
Not sure I agree with Robin about the brake wear being 2x on the fronts. With all the fangly-dangly traction control/PSM, which happens through the rear brakes, the rears seem to last no longer than the fronts.
In summary, as with tyres, if you're in doubt there is no doubt - replace!

Thanks for the response. This seems like good advice, I will get an opinion from a good independent up here on the actual state of the discs. They do feel grooved though, especially the fronts.

Think I'll need to bite the bullet and get a new set.

If I buy genuine Porsche Parts, and they are fitted at the non OPC garage will this invalidate my warranty? - I kind of think it would and I suppose the history database of the car held by Porsche would not show the new discs as having been fitted.

I had the same problem with mine after the winter last year, the discs became uneven after a period of inactivity, rust, etc.

My OPC appraised the situation, said there was at least 60% life left in the discs, skimmed them and they've been brilliant since (actually better than before the problems). A very good value £300. I'd push the OPC for reasons why they're not skimming.

having had an assessment it seems that the four disc are knackered. Checked with POC and as long as I am sourcing the discs and fitting kit from them then no issue if they are fitted with an independent. Autobahn in stirling are doing the whole job for less than half of the POC quote. They want £1600 plus vat!

I will report back the job done tomorrow.

I got my OPC to price match on labour... all done under one place then.
No chance of later being bounced from post to post..

I tried that - OPC Glasgow not interested.......must depend on the POC you deal with, which one do you use?

I'm quite lucky as I have 3 dealers within 30 minutes of home.
Solihull has got my work over the years, but it is down to an excellent service team.

well delighted to say that my discs and pads and sensors have been replaced, front and rear. Stuart Paterson at SP Autobahn in Stirling did the job for me today at his Stirling workshop.

I can heartily recommend him to anyone looking for good workmanship, expertise and a real enthusiasm for the Marque. He had a nice 911 supersport in a light metallic blue which he had restored and readied for a successful sale. A beautiful job.
