Brands Hatch Modern Classics Race Report - 924S

Brands was scorching yesterday and a 31 car grid in the Modern Classics race was very nearly capacity for the Indy circuit. The car was unchanged from Snetterton - not sure I even took it off the trailer! Practice was OK as I re-learnt the circuit having not been to Brands for about 3 years but my co-driver, Alan, was soon steaming! A split hose to the heater was eventually diagnosed and changed (yes, the heater is still fitted). We qualified 27th and third in class. OK I suppose. The race start was fantastic, one of my best ever as I got past 4 cars off the line. I then had a great battle for my half of the race with a Jag XJ40, a BMW 320, an Alfa GTV (FWD), a Toyota MR2 and a Porsche 944. Great fun. The car really handled well and I thoroughly enjoyed the race. The pit stop was not too bad for a change but Alan got held up by a safety car for a couple of laps. We eventually finished 21st from 25 finishers. Not too bad to gain 6 places from the grid position - most importantly we both really enjoyed it. My best race lap was nearly a second faster than practice after I started braking a bit earlier for the right hander at Clearways and therefore getting better turn in and a better line through the corner. I'm still 2 secs a lap slower than the fastest BRSCC 924 guys there last year but I'm happy enough seeing as this was only my 2nd race this year and only my 5th in the last 3 years with no testing either. My fastest race time was also quicker than a 944 2.5, a 944 S2, a 924 n/a and a 911 2.4 from the sister Future Classics race run in the same conditions on the same day, so all in all a good day.

(the BMW Compact has about 50 Bhp more than me and sadly in the same class!)

(the good start got me ahead of the 944 and 968 in this shot)

Good result -car looks really settled in all the pics -seems mighty low at the back -was it re-indexed?

The car really handled well, but it does look low at the back, doesn't it? A bit surprised as I hadn't noticed being that low before! I think the BRSCC Porsche 924 guys run lower than I do. We haven't touched the rear, and actually lowered the front slightly after we swapped from 16 inch to 15 inch wheels.

Well done Andy, we had a good race on Saturday although the track was very greasy for our race.

Our best time was 58.6 done by Tom which is 3 seconds slower than last year!! But everyone was similarly 3-4 seconds adrift from last years lap times.

We finished the second of 6 944's , 14th but that should have been 13th (Cock-up from the timers/CoC) discovered too late after the 15 minute cut-off.

The car in front of me overtook on double waved yellows, but because it was within three laps of the end, they didn't have to serve the stop-go penalty, and they added 2 minutes to his time. But they don't count back 2 minutes so he was deemed to have finished in front???

Don't ask me, it sounds like B***s** to me.

We missed having Oli in the pit lane but he was busy sunning himself in France.

Looking forward to Spa in three weeks time.

I drove past you on the M25 last night Andy..(wasn't in the Porsche though)
