Guess whos car broke down this evening? Yep you guessed it - my 2.0[:(]

Time to get the credit card out again.

Driving from Bedford to Luton the car lost power and I coasted it to the side of the road, looks like the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself has failed. This should be an easy job for me or my local garage.

I' ve got AA membership so it' s home now.

Talking to the AA man, he said that it' s possible to take the relay apart? Is that right? Or did I misunderstand him - did he mean the fuel pump?

you can take most relays apart....pull the base away from the body and there will be some circuitry and the relay points.....these are probaly covered in carbon ...clean with some fine wet and dry.....

this is what i have done with several relays.....i dont think a fuel pump relay is too different

hope this helps

I' ve just taken the fuel pump relay out of the car, got the little critter in front of me now.

Part Number: 433906059
Porsche Centre Hatfield quoted me £88.20 + VAT [gulp]

As the Relay has got VW/Audi on it I' m going to try there for a price, I' ll let you all know if there is a price difference.

Relay technology, for whatever purpose, is relatively crude, and they are produced in very large quantities.

If this is just a relay (a coil, with switched contacts), then £88.20 + Vat is, how shall I put this, greedy ?

Hello John and Lyndon

I either mis-heard the guy at PC Hatfield in a BIG way or they ARE greedy!

Anyway, I borrowed another relay from another members car just now and still no joy starting so it looks like the fuel pump itself has decided to call it a day - either that or there is an electrical issue going on. Luckily my next door neighbour is handy with electrics and will hopefully be able to look at it.

I' ll have to find out some prices for fuel pumps now.

All this about 17 days from when the car has to be on the Register display at Eynsham []

fuel pump from gsf is 79

but gsf give good discount.......maybe its an oportunity to get a club discount scheme set up

79 is cheaper than a mate got quoted a bit ago.....215 from a porsche dealer....

WHOA!

Got a quote for a fuel pump from PC Hatfield

Part number: 91160810202 - £279.88 + VAT
or
Bert gear at Berlyn Services - £89 + VAT

Almost makes me wonder if someone has made a mistake somewhere!

Hmmmm, now let me think..... who should I go for? [;)]

paul
i have trade discount at gsf in birm
i will ring them in the morning and try and arrange club discount.....
they give about 15 % ......more for consumable parts!!

ill post up here before 12 noon if they will play ball.

That sounds great!

I' ll be removing the old pump tomorrow to make sure it isn' t something silly like a loose wire to the pump.

That' s a good point actually - I' ll have to dig out my Haynes manual, I' ve been presuming that it' s an easy job, but I' ve just thought about getting fuel everywhere etc...

I' ll keep an eye on the forum for your post Lyndon, thanks! [:)] I' ll let you know if I need the pump.

There are two types fuel pumps for the 924 2.0, mine being an 1983 model is the ' later' one. Part number: 91160810202

Thanks

Paul - you didn' t mention whether you checked the fuel pump fuse. Even if it hasn' t burned out, the contacts might well be slightly dodgy, and a good clean and tighten could sort it all out.

To see if the relay is broken, there are two pins in the relay socket that you can short-circuit. If the fuel pump still fails to come on (with these two pins connected it should be on even without the ignition) then the relay is probably fine, and you should first suspect the fuse (as above). Then if all else fails, you' ll need to check the power supply to the fuel pump. This can be done without removing the pump from the vehicle, just put a voltmeter across the cables going into the pump. I wouldn' t recommend removing the pump unless you' ve definitely confirmed it' s broken - it can be a real sod to remove (the bolts usually seize and have to be removed with a saw).

I' ll take a look at the relay board this evening and let you know which two pins need to be connected to test the relay.

Cheers
Dan

That' s a good idea Dan, I' ll check/replace the fuse next.

As a bit of further information from when It broke down. It cut out once, I left it for about 15 minutes then it restarted - it went another 12 miles or so and cut out again and this time it wouldn' t restart.

I' m getting no ' whizzing' noise whatsoever from the pump at the mo.

The Haynes manual gives some information on checking voltages, I' ll check this as well before I try to remove the pump (it looks easy at least [&:])

I' ll keep you all informed [:)]

paul...
gsf say that they will give a 10% discount for club members.....
all they need to do is ring up for a GSF card this will entitle the bearer to the discount over someone just ringing for parts!!

hope this helps
lyndon

Oh what fun I' ve had today.

To cut a long story short, I' ve established several things:

I found the AA had not reconnected the hot start valve wiring. So my test of the fuel pump relay on day 1 was run with the wiring disconnected.

With the ignition on there is no voltage to the fuel pump, the battery voltage is fine.

My next door neighbour and I ran a cable from the battery directly to the fuel pump, and it worked.

SO... it looks like I need a second go with my friends relay - if that doesn' t work it looks like a wiring problem.

15 days to Eynsham - no panic [&:]

ADDITIONAL:

Thanks for the reminder about GSF Lyndon, there is one in Luton, I' ll pop in there and get another relay, can' t go wrong for that price!
What branch did you arrange the discount with BTW?

birmingham

but the gsf card is a branch wide scheme
just ring the luton branch and ask for one for club discount ....

I was a bit dissapointed to find that the relay (GSF number: 93594) is now discontinued at GSF [:(]

Who is next stockist on the list I wonder, time for a bit of research methinks.

Why is nothing ever easy? [8|]

thats not good.....they advertised it on there website!

try a VW dealer as the injection system is a faily common setup!

maybe theres a crossover number IE same part new number

Paul, Richard at Club Autosport is always worth a call, as he can get any part you need and mail-order is no problem. His number is 01384 410879

OK people - another update!

The car will be towed to a nearby Bosch specialist for a diagnostic check over later today. plus (just in case) I' ve ordered a new fuel pump relay from a VW dealer using the part number 433906059 £29.36 + VAT

Some places I' ve rang say this has now been superceded by part number 321906059F £37.40 +VAT - but that is still half the price that Porsche want!

11 days to Eynsham!
