Breakdown service

As much as I am enjoying my new car, I am aware that she's 21 years old, and likely to have an off day now and then. I figure that getting some sort of roadside assistance/relay service is a good plan. I'm not prepared to give the RAC any money, as they are owned by Aviva (the same mob that own Norwich Union); but beyond that I'm open to suggestions. So has anyone had an particularly good or bad experiences with breakdown services and their 944?

The AA have allways been excellent when I've had to call them out. Their mechanics are really good and can often diagnose a problem within a few minutes.

I went with the AA, when I got my car purely based on positive experiences I had had in the past with them, when running bangers that often broke down[8|]

Mainly due to price as I haven't broken down in ages. I've no idea what they're like in practise but I figure for the infrequency of breakdowns why pay over the odds.

Auto Aid is an insurance service where you pay up front and then claim it back so you'd have to be disciplined about making the claim.

I checked the AA yesterday as my Roadside (i.e. basic) membership is up for renewal. Currently that's £45 per annum but there's discount of £16 if you sign up online, bringing the cost way down. For some reason my renewal price was £50, so I rang them to "discuss" and got them back to a more palatable £40. Even the AA, it seems, can be negotiated with.

I called them out last year too for the BMW and the service I received was very good.
