Fellow owners

Have anyone else noticed this ( mine pre mot inspection at revolution porsche)

Tyres manufactured 2015 / fitted July 2015 @ 36k miles - drawn to my attention this week at mot / major service time. 44k miles

Fronts 235/35/19 N rated
Rears 295/30/19 N rated

About 8,000 over three years

Since fitting had 2 wheel alignment checks so camber etc aint a issue - tread depth now fronts 6mm rear 4mm

Is it worth informing Bridgestone ( be fobbed off) or go to a french tyre that provides great grip

Michelin next time

Same here!

i bought some wheels / tyres from a customer and they were cracked / perished but relatively new. These had been stored mostly in a benign environment.

He complained to bridgestone abd these were the words:

"Thank you for the images. The tyres visual cracking is only to the surface rubber and will not pose any detriment to safety of vehicle dynamics.

The surface rubber cracks can be caused by various factors such as; cleaning martials used, low mileage usage, low tyre inflation pressure use, ageing of tyres (ozoning). Unfortunately all of these factors are outside of Bridgestone’s control.

The tyres will most likely wear out before the surface rubber cracks get any deeper. In their present state we would recommend you continue to keep the tyres in service.

You can forward me some more images moving forward and I can again based on the images offer you my opinion.

I trust this is acceptable. If you require any further information about this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me again.”

Priceless C2 exactly as i imagined the outcome would be - however hardly a banner line for Bridgestone ' OUR TYRES ARE LIKELY TO WEAR OUT BEFORE THE RUBBER CRACKS GET DEEPER ' [:)]
a Gerald Ratner customer service moment - Rubbish a tyre shows these qualities - onwards

Thank you for your information

We actually see this problem quite a lot with Bridgestone and for that reason I only supply them if I really have to (say, to matching remaining tyres).

If only we had a chemist in our midsts who cut cut through the BS from bridgestone!

I had the same issues with Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my M135i. Emailed Michelin at 10k miles and 1 year old... they said it could be cleaning products, dressing, etc.

I said no no as I use the same on all cars... in the end those super sticky tyres did 25k before they wore out and they were faultless in terms of performance.

Have mp4s and never look back.

Whereabouts on the tyre do the cracks appear? Any photos?

I have Bridgestones on the C4 GTS and have done about 11k miles in just over 12 months.

Recent tread measurements showed fronts at 5mm and rears at 3mm or just under so will be changing rears fairly soon.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

my cracks were in side side walls where smooth face met grip.

Change at 3mm. they are much less effective in wet at 3mm. Much.

Not suggesting this is you but aiming to get close to legal limit is roulette. It's like drinking as much as you can to 'just' squeeze under the prosecution level when driving.

Think you are still as effective? Hmmm.... that's what I thought. ??

I had experience of this with Continentals on my daily drive (non performance car!)
Virtually similar response from Continental. I've not bought Continental tyres since.

Had a set of Bridgestones on my 996, bought from a tyre dealer ! When I took the front bumper off to clean the rads out I noticed cracks running round the middle of the tread. Tyres were less than 3 years old at the time.

I had cracks all the way round in the shallowest depth of the tread - between the tread blocks when I had my Honda. (RE040As)
Tyres were 3 yr old.
I took it in and I had 3 tyres replaced f.o.c. no questions.

In fairness I've had Bridgestones since, and they have been ok.

The Porsche ones I've just replaced were starting to crack but they were date stamped 2010 (RE050A's)

Just did a quick visual check on the tyres - no cracking of sidewalls or in tread blocks from what I can see while the car is static in the garage.
Manufacture dates are : Fronts week 15 and week 18 2016, Rears: week 11 and week 12 2016.
I'll be happy to replace like for like.
I particularly like the pronounced rim protection feature offered by the Bridgestones.

I'm must say I've had quite incredible wear from my REO 50 s - I don't use aggressive wheel cleaners which may effect the tyres but my current fronts were put on a 17,000 and still have over 3 mm of tread and I'm now on 48,000 miles 5 years later including 6 plus track days
I'm changing them to Michelin pilot cup sport 2 in the summer as I only drive at weekends for pleasure and fancy a change

Wow thats some going Tony !
I bought my car privately off a guy and the car used to belong to his dad.
He said he'd had 20 something thousand miles out the RE050As.
The history and receipts seem to stack up with this too, and I've just taken the Bridgestones off because the fronts were ready for a change, but the rears still have 4+mm on them. Seem very durable.

FYI, I've also just changed to the Michelins as my car is only a weekend toy most of the time.
