Bring on the cold!

Well is it just my imagination or has anyone else noticed their cars performance improving noticably since the cold weather has moved in? My car just feels so much more responsive and much quicker. I've havn't really noticed it that much in previous winters. If only it was this cold at the last Weltmiester day.
 
I have just come home,been out with my mrs, and i would totally agree with you[:D][:D],although last night lost traction - its started to get slippy....so lets be careful out there everybody!!!
P.S Is it me or is there another side effect of colder weather.... more squeaks from the interior of the car???????
 
Funny enough i've always thought that mine drives much better when the weather is colder too - especially on early morning runs she drives great.
 
Yes there's that definite little extra kick with a breath of cold weather in the air. Always noticed it on turbo cars. The one blessing of Winter.
 
Really noticeable on turbo cars, on me old 900 I used to have to tweak the MBC a little in winter to stop the overboost switch from being hit and cutting the fuel supply, don't really notice much difference in the S2.
 
Yes, I too have noticed better pick up/ more power from my S2 in the colder weather. It not surprising really, being simple physics. A gas is more dense when cold, hence colder weather you get more air/fuel mixture into the cylinders and therefore more power. I wonder if it would be worth fitting an intercooler to a normally aspirated car? How much extra power would you get?

Any marginal gain would be negated (and then some) by the increased work the engine would need to do to draw the air in through or via the cooler. It certainly wouldn't be a free-flow induction, which is less of an issue with forced induction.

No.....its air cooled so would be a similar temperature than normal intake.

You could redirect the air con into the inlet [:D] but I think you would use more power than you gain.

My old STi and EVO used to pick up a noticeable amount of power on cold days.

More power and less traction at a stroke :)

Cold dense slightly damp air contains more fuel per volume unit, all turbos will perform better in those conditions than on a hot dry day. Think intercooler. You can also have a cold `dry` (low humidity) day and it will not perform as well.

I posted this after the 2006 Wm day as it was hot and dry in 2005 and cooler and damper in 2006. Cant remember what it was like in 2007 as I couldn't make it [&:]

I am having this exact problem in my 900 now that it's getting cold. It can be most irritating and almost dangerous when overtaking...
 
Way OT, but if you still have a functioning APC system and not a MBC on the 900 then the stock boost level is way below the cut off switch. If you have tweaked the trim pots on the PCB inside the APC then you can always tweak the pressure trim pot back again a touch. In theory a red box should keep the boost low enough to also not hit the overboost cut off switch, but I don't know much about red boxes because when I had my 900 they always seemed a waste of money given that 5 minutes with some watch screw drivers and the APC box prised open achieves more or less similar results for free.

BTW my MBC on the 900 was the wastegate actuator since I binned the APC control! i.e. backpressure in the exhaust was the only thing stopping it from blowing up.
 
sounds a bit sketchy Neil! ;) Thanks for the advice - as it happens I am well versed on the whole APC issue. My box is the standard black one with some resistors swapped over and the pots adjusted. Gives user-adjustable boost while retaining the safety aspect of the APC system. I have left the overboost switch on as a precaution - in the summer it never gets that high but once it starts getting cold outside it can reach that threshold. I shall have to lower the boost a bit for the winter - it's just such a PITA... I've set up for 1.2 bar. [:D][:D] but the overboost cuts at about 1.3....
