Broke-down this morning

Battery warning light came on whilst cruising on the M4. It went off after about 1 min then a couple of minutes later the ABS light came on, then the airbag light, then I lost the power steering and gradually ground to a halt. Luckily managed to get off the motorway. Alarm was going nuts, locks up and down, the works!

Guy from the AA couldn't fix it. Thought it was probably the alternator? Does this sound likely and if so, any ideas of likely cost to replace? The car went on a recovery truck to the garage but they did not have time to look at the car but first thoughts were alternator or cambelt. If the cambelt is visible at top of engine, nearest the seats then I saw it was still intact and if this is the same as the 'polyrib belt' ? it was changed not so long ago.

The only difference I noticed in the last couple of days was that the idle speed seemed to be slightly higher. Whether this was an 'early warning' something was wrong, I have no idea.

Car was due a service now anyway so I hope that can be done whilst its in! Cheers for any guidance from all the clever ones on the forum [;)]

If the alternator wasn't charging it would take less power and possibly result in the engine speed increasing slightly.

Thanks. Garage have confirmed the alternator needs replacing. Sounds like its not going to be cheap. Will post the details when its done!

Hi J,

If you are willing to get it yourself you could save a bit of money. A Bosch alternator (OEM) is £385.45 whearas Lucas sell them at £110. (both at Eurocarparts)

Thanks Rodney, I'll check this out tomorrow. There seem to be a few companies doing part-ex for reconditioned units but they look expensive compared to the Bosch unit you mention. Cheers
