Broken door handle

The drivers door handle has snapped on the link of my 88 turbo and i was going to buy the repair kit ,how good are the kits and how much are they ?? . And i need the clear cover that sits next to the front fog lamp (o/s) any ideas on how much they cost ??

The door handles seem quite expensive to buy and im after a cheap fix as the car will only be on the road for a month then its getting turned into a track car .

A time when you could be even more grateful that a 3rd party were able to open the door from outside because you spent a few extra £ on the genuine article rather than "a cheap fix"

For some reason my car has a different key for the driver's door - all the other bits of the car use the 'proper' key. Anyone know if it's possible to have the lock modified or supplied to suit a particular key ?

Easiest way is to swap barrels from drivers to passengers side and vice versa. Then it is only the passenger side that is out of sync.
Contact a locksmith regarding changing the internals of the barrel.
Cheers,

Fred

I did this a while ago on my old 44,if you take the barrel out of the handle you can replace the tumblers to suit your key,i got some tumblers from a VW garage but if you were to buy them you really need to know which ones you need which is difficult as its trial and error, fortunatly i knew the parts manger at the garage and he let me take a box full home and bring back what i didnt need, but as fred says it would be much easier to just swap themn round !!

Thanks for the ideas guys. Last time I looked inside my door, I couldn't see any way of getting the handle off without getting the glass out first - the handle itself comes away fine but the linkage seemed inaccessible.

Is it a VW lock then ?

The handles are different on the linkages ,im not sure about the lock but the inner tumblers are the same as Vw. You can get the handle off with out taking the glass out ,the best way is to get a long screw driver to pop the linmakes off and some long nose pliers to get the linkage clips back on agian. Its a fidly job too do and requires a bit of patience but once youve done it its quite easy !!!
