Broken heater control

Hi, all

My car has developed the classic problem with its climate control - having to turn up the temperature knob over a long journey to keep the real temperature constant.

I read somewhere that there is someone that fixes the control unit for much less money than Porsche asks for a new control unit. I think that it was in an article in 911 and Porsche World.

Does anyone know more, and can put me in touch with the relevant person, or give me a web link? (Google has let me down on this one!)

Alistair

Alistair,

The company you are looking for is Accinni Giovanni Srl in Italy. Davide Accinni is the man to talk to (e-mail: davide@accinni.com) and their web site is at www.accinni.com.

They will repair the CCU if required for a very reasonable price. Davide speaks (or, at least, writes) perfect English and will help where he can.

Before you go posting your CCU off to Italy though, it might be worthwhile checking to see if the monitor fan at the back of the CCU is clogged with dust/hair/WHY which might prevent it pulling the cabin air over the temperature monitor thereby stopping it doing the job it's supposed to do. It's also possible that the fan can get clogged up completely and not be able to run at all.

Hope that helps.

Best regards

Dave

Eek! ÂŁ350 is not welcome. I will try cleaning and then approach Davide if this does not cure it.

Thanks, All

The sensor was utterly filthy. I took the unit out and removed the blowe from the back. I then blew through the duct that contains the sensor in the reverse direction from normal flow, and a huge lump of crud came flying out. Loads of money saved!

My sampler fan runs all the time and kills the battery in 2 days so I disconnected it, does any one know the fix for this? I hope its as easy has Alisters fault was to cure.

Mike,

I fear that the fan running permanently is a sign of the driver circuit having failed. This is likely to be a job for Davide Accinni rather than a quick fix.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I have contacted Davide, 250 euro all in, a lot less than a new unit so I will send it to Italy.

Mike.

I sent the unit to Accini and had to pay an extra 45 euro to get it back! Fitted it today and the problem is still the same [:(] I have just emailed them and will have to see what they are prepared to do about it, not at all happy, ÂŁ210 + a lot of hassel. I will post again when I have a reply.

I sent the unit back to them, Davide told me it was now not repairable, but he would source new hardware for me at no extra cost.Got it back last Monday and fitted it this morning. The good news is the sampler fan no longer spins [:)] . Now the bad news[]!
The only function that now works is the Defrost Button and nothing else it is totally useless I was better off when it was just the fan spining at least everything else worked O.K. So after sending the unit to Italy twice I have spent ÂŁ220 + and I have a unit that is in worse condition now than when I started.
What do you think the chances are of getting my money back?

Anybody got a spare heater control unit they want to sell?

Mike,

I'm sorry to hear your tale of woe. I'd heard nothing but good reports previously about Accini and it's surprising that you should have so much trouble. In your shoes I think I'd be very interested to hear what Accini have to say. You would imagine that they would do some amount of testing before sending the unit back to you.

It's interesting that you say the defrost button works, since that activates just about all of the functions at once.

Since these units are not cheap - even the second-hand ones seem to go for substantial amounts - I'd be inclined to at least hear what Accini have to say. Really frustrating though I'm sure!!!

Dave

Accinni, are telling me its a problem with my car, I find it all a bit strange because they told me that they had fixed it the first time, I sent it back to them and they said it was not repairable, they then told me they and changed the hard wear and now its o.k., now its a different problem, Neinmeister orginally told me it was the control unit.
I have checked it out again the main blower works on the air recirculation and defrost switches only, how can the problem be anything else other than the unit?
I am trying to find another 964 locally to try it in, so far without success.[&o] Wish I had left well alone and had not sent it to Italy.

Mike,

Do the front blowers operate when you rotate the switch off of the 0?? I'm wondering if there is a problem with the front blowers which may cause a knock-on problem with the rear blower. It may be that when the "defrost" and "recirc" buttons are depressed the CCU may energise the rear blower regardless of air demand but under more "normal" circumstances it may require the "suck" generated by the front blowers. I have heard of several problems with other owners where the final stage blower amplifier under the central electric has failed causing the drive to the front blowers to fail. I'm just looking for other possible problems.

Regards

Dave

Dave,
No the front blowers do not operate, just the engine blower, they all used to work fine untill it was 'repaired'.

Mike.

I think your plan of trying another unit (or your unit in another car) is a good one. My only concern would be what potential there is for damaging another car with your (potentially) faulty unit or damaging another CCU with your (potentially) faulty car.

I think I'd be a bit nervous either way round. I don't think I've got a better idea though, I'm sorry to say.

It would be nice to get a better idea of what Accinni thought they fixed but I suspect it's not terribly easy getting detail out of them. It's strange that they changed from writing it off to fixing it so quickly!!!

According to Adrian's book (P415) non-operation of the front blower fans could be final stage amplifier as I mentioned before. Also, if the rear blower only operates at high speed (when defrost is selected) there is a chance that your slow speed ballast resistor is duff (technical term!!). If the rear blower will not operate on slow speed, the front blowers will not come on. You can check the ballast resistor with a multi-meter - it's clipped into the rear blower plenum tube just near the rear electrical panel.

Keep trying Mike, I'm sure we'll get there in the end!!!

Dave

Guys, my heater control seems to work ok except the fan comes on and off when it wants to any ideas? also are there two seperate fans?

Tone,

You might be better to start a new thread with a seperate problem. Just to answer your query, the 964 has 2 fans up front in the heater/ventilation unit, the big blower in the engine compartment, a temperature sampler fan on the back of the CCU as well as the blowers for the oil cooler and a/c condenser (if you have a/c).

If your dash fans operate spasmodically there's a good chance that your rear blower is not operating (at least at slow speed). Check the fuse in the rear electrical box (it should be 30A) and, if that's OK, check the ballast resistor in the blower plenum immediately alongsiide the electrical box.

You can check the slow speed fan by turning the temperature knob to the red dot, turn on the ignition and the blower should start immediately. If not, you have a problem.

Regards

Dave

Well, The problem is definetly the repaired unit, I tried a good unit in my car and every thing works O.K.
I contacted Accanni and I have been deafend by the silence.
So I will not be recommending them in the future! They are only any good when everything works O.K. Any problems and they do not want to know. If it had been a U.K. company I would take them to the small claims court. What do you do with an Italian company?

folks, (Dave especially)
thanks for all the info, I just started to understand the heater on a 964 and have now fixed mine using your excellent logic.[:)]
If I can free myself from my 944t, I may run the beetle everyday, but not with misty glass.
much appreciated
George

944t - balanced by the factory
964c2 - balanced by the driver
964rs - ballet on wheels

Hi , I have just purchased a '89 964 C4, my heater blower only works when the temperature setting is turned down to the cold setting, the minute the knob is turned up the blower stops. Any advice cures welcomed, thanks Paul
