Broken key / Ingnition problem?

Car is a 3.2, pre-G50 gearboax., RHD.

Car is off road at moment, and I think the car has been tampered with ( door was left unloked once when I had a battery problem )
Now I cen't get the ignition key fully into the slot - so can't turn it.

I wondered if 1 - very optimistically[&:] I could put some super glue on the end of something thin, and stick it in - and hope (!) it attached to whatever has stuck in the key slot
or
(2) probably a better bet - take the ignition switch / barrel etc. out
but - do I need to be able to get the key in and turning to be able to do this??
take it to bits, remove problem, and re-assemble...or buy a new key barrel / 2nd hand one??[8D]

Any help gratefully received.....time of the essence as pregnant wife has warned car tinkering time is running out![:(]

Thanks.[;)]

Hi,
Had one on my SC which is basically the same.
Is the steering lock on?
If not the whole unit can be removed but the rivets (2) have to be drilled out and its a bitch to get out easily.
The ignition plug has to be removed on the back of the unit and has 2 cross head crews holding it on and unless you have a very short screwdriver and good wrist muscles its again a bitch.
You can use a flexible drive to get at it.
Once thats done its just wiggling it about to get it out.
New units very costly and come with a new key and switch unit were around 250- 300.
Best of luck
Contact Charles Marsden, he is very good with 3.2s his in Kent[:)]

Porka is spot on. The only advice I would add is to invest in a dremmel. I used one to cut a slot in the shear bolt heads so that I could simply un screw them, worked a treat!! I do also seem to remember a post on pelican parts on re furbing the barrel. May be worth a search...

Good luck ...

A centre punch and small hammer will often do the trick. Just try and tap round the shear bolts heads (anti-clockwise of course!)
Good luck.

Clive

If you're trying the centre punch form of attack, clamp or wire the lock housing to the column before you start. This will save the spring release mechanism working against you as you loosen the bolts.
